Seven killed at US drag car race
Stick to PS3’s instead. The need for speed, except you only get one life.
Seven people were killed when a car veered into a crowd at an illegal drag race in the United States.
The crash happened at about 0340 (0840 GMT) on Route 210 just outside Accokeek in Maryland – about 20 miles (32km) from Washington DC.
At least four people were injured, police said. Their conditions were not immediately known.
“It’s probably one of the worst scenes I’ve seen,” said Prince George’s County Police Cpl Clinton Copeland.
A white sedan went out of control and ploughed into the crowd of spectators on the roadside, although it was not clear if it was participating in the race, Cpl Copeland said.
It was followed by a tractor-trailer that may also have hit bystanders as it tried to avoid the crash, he said.
He said investigators had “more questions than answers”.
Witnesses told the Associated Press news agency that a crowd of about 50 people had just watched two cars speed past in the race, when another car, with no lights on, veered into spectators.
“There were just bodies everywhere; it was horrible,” Crystal Gaines, 27, told AP.
Her father was among the dead. “He wasn’t breathing, he wasn’t moving,” she said. “His body was in pieces.”
Victims’ bodies were scattered along a 183-metre (200-yard) stretch of road, police said.
The driver of the sedan did not appear to be seriously hurt, but a passenger was among the dead, police said.

Drag racing takes place at a sanctioned track with saftey provisions for the drivers and spectators. Street racing are illegal speed contests where its everyman for themselves, drivers and spectators alike. Yes its a tragedy but everyone there was there by choice. If you want to race, take it to the track.
What is a 61 year old man and his daughter and granson doing on the side of the road at 3am watching an illegal drag race. this story doesn’t make any sense to me at all. It was very poorly written & the author shouldn’t have written anything til they could paint a better picture.
I agree with Tuna, exactly. What’s up with having your child on a dark highway at 3 in the morning? Sounds like this woman will probably be getting visit from child welfare before she’s able to attend her father’s funeral. And the persons who were racing should be arrested and charged with manslaughter (their actions led to this and they obviously knew these people for them to know they were racing at this hour and place). There should be stiff consequences for the ones who facilitated this tragedy (the drivers), so that it sends a strong message to others who do this to stop and think “Hey, is it worth the risk?” If they have ANY common sense, that’d be “NO!”
These people knew the risks when they went to the so called “races” being held on a public road. Bunch of idiots.
Let’s hear it for the Darwin Awards. I can’t think of anything more idiotic. That child should be permanently removed from that mother. MY ONLY SYMPATHY IS TO THE INNOCENT DRIVER OF THE CAR that hit the people. I hope that driver sues every one of the bystanders involved. And wins. Bunch of Idiots. Deserved what they got.
Smarterthanyou you should be ashamed for feeling sorry for the driver who killed them all. They should all be charged, the driver should be charged for the murders (all), the bystanders should be charged for standing on the highway at 3 am. The child should be taken away from its mother because having your child out at 3 am on the street is child endangerment. They didn’t deserve to die, but they sure did deserve a good wake up call. People need to grow up and realize they live in the world of reality. And the 61 year old man who had his daughter and grandchild out there, at his age he should know way better and be a role model for his family. I hope the world wakes up one day!
Driving dangerously is terrible but much more is this feller who killed people…
