MOORESTOWN, N.J. (CBS) ― More charges have been filed against a Burlington County, N.J. police officer who was recently charged with sexually assaulting three girls.

Authorities announced Moorsetown Officer Robert Melia Jr., 38, has been charged with four counts of animal cruelty after allegedly engaging in sex acts with cows between June and December of 2006, reported CBS station KYW-TV in Philadelphia.

Melia and his former girlfriend, Heather Lewis, were previously charged with three counts of aggravated sexual assault and one count of criminal sexual contact with three girls in his home from 2003 until 2006.

Melia is being held on $510,000 bail.

AMSTETTEN, Austria – A man has confessed to imprisoning his daughter for 24 years in a windowless cell with a soundproofed door and fathering seven children with her including three who “never saw sunlight,” police said Monday.

Josef Fritzl, now 73, also told investigators that he tossed the body of one of the children in an incinerator when the infant died shortly after birth, said Franz Polzer, head of the Lower Austrian Bureau of Criminal Affairs.

“We are being confronted with an unfathomable crime,” Interior Minister Guenther Platter said.

The daughter, who is now 42, had been missing since 1984 and was found by police in the town of Amstetten on Saturday evening after police received a tip. She and the children have been placed under psychiatric care in an undisclosed location.

Authorities on Monday released several photos showing parts of the cramped basement cell, with a small bathroom and a narrow passageway leading to a tiny bedroom. Investigators said an electronic keyless-entry system apparently kept the daughter from escaping from the cell, which was made of solid reinforced concrete.

After initially withholding Friztl’s full name, police released it along with a photograph at a news conference Monday. Fritzl’s identity was widely reported by media in Austria and elsewhere in Europe. He briefly appeared in court Monday in the city of St. Poelten, where he was to be held in pre-trial detention.

“He admitted that he locked his daughter, who was 18 at the time, in the cellar, that he repeatedly had sex with her, and that he is the father of her seven children,” Polzer told The Associated Press.

Three of the surviving children lived with the grandparents and were registered with authorities. The other three — aged 19, 18 and 5 — were confined during their entire lives to the darkness of their cell, Polzer said.

Hans-Heinz Lenze, a senior local official, said the suspect’s wife apparently had “no idea” of what went on and was devastated.

“You have to imagine that this woman’s world fell apart,” he said.

Austrians — still scandalized by a 2006 case involving a young woman who was kidnapped and imprisoned in a basement cell outside Vienna for more than eight years — expressed disbelief at the latest case.

“The entire nation must ask itself just what is fundamentally going wrong,” the newspaper Der Standard said Monday in a commentary.

Guenter Pramreiter, who owns a bakery just down the street, told The Associated Press that the suspect and his wife would regularly buy bread and rolls, though never in large quantities.

“They appeared normal, just like any other family,” Pramreiter said. “I’m totally shocked, this was next door. It’s terrible.”

The case unfolded after a gravely ill teenager was found unconscious on April 19 in the building where her grandparents live, and taken to a hospital in the town of Amstetten, about 75 miles west of Vienna. Authorities publicly appealed for the child’s mother to come forward to help diagnose the young woman’s condition.

After receiving a tip, police picked up the 42-year-old woman — whom authorities identified as Elisabeth F. — and her father on Saturday close to the hospital.

Police said she appeared “greatly disturbed” during questioning. She agreed to talk only after authorities assured her she would no longer have to have contact with her father and that her children would be cared for.

On Sunday evening, police said investigators had found the area where Elisabeth and three of the children were held captive. Investigators said the rooms were at most 5 feet 6 inches feet high. The area had a TV and small hot plates for cooking.

In a chronology of events outlined in a police statement, authorities said Elisabeth told them her father began sexually abusing her when she was 11. She told police that some years later in 1984, he sedated her, handcuffed her and locked her in the cellar.

Police said a letter written by Elisabeth had apparently surfaced a month after her disappearance, asking her parents not to search for her.

The Austria Press Agency reported that the surviving children are three boys and three girls. DNA tests were expected to determine whether Fritzl is the father.

Sunday’s developments recalled another case that shocked Austrians in the summer of 2006, when a young woman escaped after being largely confined to a tiny underground dungeon in a quiet Vienna suburb for more than eight years.

Natascha Kampusch was 10 years old when she was kidnapped in Vienna on her way to school in March 1998. Her abductor, Wolfgang Priklopil, threw himself in front of a train just hours after her dramatic escape.

Kampusch, now 20, issued a statement Monday saying she wanted to contact Elisabeth to offer emotional and financial help.

GAZA CITY — While representatives of various Palestinian resistance groups were heading to Cairo Monday, April 28, to discuss a truce, Israeli occupation forces killed at least seven people in Gaza, including four young siblings.

“They were eating and they were hit,” a neighbor told Reuters.

An Israeli tank fired a shell a one-storey Palestinian house in the northern Gaza Strip town of Beit Hanoun while the family was having breakfast.

The bombing immediately killed four siblings whose ages ranged from 1 to 5 years old.

The victims were identified as Mussab Abu Maateq, one, Hana Abu Maateq, three, Rudeina Abu Maateq, four, and Saleh Abu Maateq, five.

Their mother died of her critical wounds in hospital, doctors at the Kamal Oudwan hospital said.

Nine other people were wounded in the Israeli attack, including two other siblings who are in life-threatening conditions.

A Palestinian resistance fighter was killed in an exchange of fire with the invading Israeli occupation troops in the area.

Earlier, a Palestinian civilian was detained by Israeli occupation forces.

“They soon released him before gunning him down,” said a reporter for the Doha-based Al-Jazeera news television.

A 14-year-old Palestinian girl was killed by Israeli occupation forces Sunday in nearby Beit Lahiya.

An air and ground blitz unleashed by Israel against Gaza in February claimed the lives of more than 129 people, including more than 40 children, toddlers and newborn babies, as well as 13 women.

The onslaught came one day after Israeli Deputy Defense Minister Matan Vilnai threatened to turn the sealed off Strip into a “bigger holocaust” for the Palestinians.

At least 443 people, the vast majority of them Palestinians, have been killed since the US-hosted Annapolis peace conference in November.

Truce Talks

The latest Israeli aggression came as representatives of the Popular Resistance Committees (PRC), the leftist Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP) and the Democratic Front for the Liberation of Palestine (DFLP), headed to Cairo.

Egyptian intelligence chief Omar Suleiman will host them on Tuesday and Wednesday to draft a common position regarding the truce proposal.

Hamas last week offered Israel a six-month truce, including an end to rocket fire into Israel, if Israel lifted an embargo on the territory.

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas on Sunday gave his unconditional support to Egypt’s mediation efforts.

A proposal put forward by Egyptian Foreign Minister Ahmed Abul Gheit stipulates a ceasefire, the opening of the border crossings, a lifting of the blockade and finally the release of Palestinian prisoners in exchange for captured Israeli soldier Gilad Shalit.

Israel has been closing the Gaza Strip’s exits to the outside world since last June.

It has completely locked down the coastal area, home to nearly 1.6 million people, since January.

EASLEY, S.C. – A teenager who had recently moved back home after breaking up with his live-in girlfriend is accused of gunning down and killing four family members, stunning friends and neighbors.

Nathaniel Dickson, 18, was arrested Saturday night at a home in Belton about 20 miles from where the bodies of his father, stepmother, stepsister and younger brother were found, authorities said.

Those who knew Dickson grappled with how the quiet teen who loved video games and sports now was charged with four counts of murder.

“I can’t put my finger on what happened,” said Melissa Funk, whose 16-year-old son, Robbie, was good friends with both the suspect and the youngest victim. “It’s not what I’ve known him to be.”

Authorities would not discuss a possible motive.

“I’m going to have this case tried in the courtroom, not out on the streets,” Anderson County Sheriff David Crenshaw said Sunday.

The suspect’s mother, Patricia Dickson, screamed and cried as he appeared before a county magistrate on a closed-circuit television for a brief hearing Sunday night, the Anderson Independent-Mail reported.

The teen remained motionless as the judge read him his rights and said a higher-level judge would hear any request for bail. He did not have an attorney at the hearing.

Dickson’s father was found shot early Saturday in the yard of his one-story house in a wooded neighborhood just outside of Easley.

Samuel Andrew Dickson Jr., 46, died as paramedics arrived. Officers then went inside and found the bodies of his wife, Martiza Hurtado Dickson, 46; Melissa Giliam Salazar, 19; and Taylor Dickson, 14. All had been shot to death.

One victim was found behind a clothes dryer, apparently trying to hide when slain. Authorities refuse to say how many times the victims were shot or release other details.

Dickson is the only suspect, and more charges could be filed against him, the sheriff said.

Dickson graduated from high school last year and moved in with his girlfriend, working a series of fast-food and restaurant jobs. The two broke up, and Dickson moved back in with his parents about two weeks ago, said Funk, who wasn’t sure whether he had a current job.

Neighbors said the family was quiet and kept to itself. Joyce Allen’s husband worked with Samuel Dickson, who went by Andy. The elder Dickson was an electrician with Vulcan Materials, a company that provides sand, gravel and crushed stone for construction.

Dickson didn’t say much at work, keeping to himself. Most of Allen’s memories are of him with his sons.

“He was crazy, crazy, crazy about those kids,” Allen said. “I’d see him running up and down the road, taking them to ball games.”

Taylor Dickson had just made one of the junior varsity baseball teams at Wren High School.

Neighbors said Martiza Dickson was a native of Colombia and worked as a translator. Melissa Salazar was attending a nearby technical college, Funk said.

Crazy Whites head back after fatal SoCal shark attack

SOLANA BEACH, Calif. – A few paddleboarders ignored posted signs warning that a great white shark still could be lurking below the surface Saturday, just a day after a swimmer was killed in a rare attack near San Diego.

“It’s like going to see ‘Jaws’ — getting in the water the next day, all you could think about was the music,” said Bob Rief, 63, who was teaching a friend how to stand up on a paddleboard. “But if you’re afraid of the ocean, you shouldn’t be in it.”

The San Diego-area native was worried that the attack would scare away vacationers or weekend beachgoers and hurt businesses. Solana Beach is 14 miles northwest of San Diego.

Despite the summer-like temperatures and cloudless skies that normally lure large crowds, beaches were mostly empty near where triathlete David Martin was killed Friday.

A shark, presumed to be a great white, lifted Martin, 66, out of the water with his legs in its jaws, leaving deep lacerations and shredding the retired veterinarian’s black wetsuit.

On Saturday, about eight miles of shoreline from San Diego north to Carlsbad remained under advisory closure as sheriff’s helicopters scanned the shore for signs of the shark — and for unwitting swimmers.

The beaches in San Diego will be patrolled throughout the weekend, according to city and county officials. A weekend surfing competition in Encinitas, a seaside town north of the attack, was canceled because of safety concerns.

Few surfers dotted the normally crowded breaks off Tide Beach Park or Cardiff State Beach — perhaps as much because of shark fears as weak swells.

“I thought twice only because the waves are so small,” said Lynn Richardson, 63, a retiree who nosed his orange kayak straight out toward Tabletop Reef, where the shark struck. A lifeguard with a megaphone called Richardson in for a stern talking-to but shrugged after Richardson said he was willing to play the odds.

Shark expert Richard Rosenblatt said Friday that, judging by Martin’s wounds and the nature of the attack, the shark probably was a great white 12 to 17 feet long. Experts said the likelihood of finding the shark that attacked Martin was slim.

Great white sharks are rare in Southern California, though female great whites sometimes come south from their usual territory in the cooler waters of the central and northern coast to pup. Few make the mistake of attacking humans instead of seals or sea lions, their usual prey.

Martin was the first shark fatality in San Diego County since 1994, when a woman’s body was found with bites off Ocean Beach, near downtown San Diego.

The last fatal shark attack in California, according to data from the state Department of Fish and Game, took place Aug. 15, 2004, off the coast of Mendocino County. The victim was a man diving for shellfish with a friend. On Aug. 19, 2003, a female swimmer was killed by a great white at Avila Beach in San Luis Obispo County on the central California coast.

Overall, shark attacks are extremely rare. There were 71 reported worldwide last year, up from 63 in 2006. Only one attack, in the South Pacific, was fatal, according to the University of Florida.

White soldier in jail for sexual assault on 12 year UK girl

A former US Marine has been sentenced for abducting and sexually assaulting a 12-year-old British girl.

Toby Studabaker was given a prison term of 11 years and four months by a federal judge in Kalamazoo, Michigan.

He pleaded guilty to possessing child pornography and transporting a child across international borders for the purpose of sexual exploitation.

Studabaker “groomed” the girl on the internet before meeting in Manchester and flying to Paris in July 2003.

Hotel stay

The ex-Marine was deported last June to face the charges in the US after being given concurrent sentences of four-and-a-half years each in the UK in April 2004.

He had admitted child abduction offences and inciting a child to commit an act of gross indecency.

The pair stayed in a Paris hotel, where they had sex, for two days before travelling on by train to Strasbourg.

Studabaker, from Three Rivers, Michigan, was arrested in Frankfurt, Germany, and extradited to the UK the following month.

The girl, from the Wigan area of Greater Manchester, cannot be named for legal reasons.

“Abortion art,” the latest in white creativity

An all new low for white people. So this is what passes for “art” at the Ivy league schools.

Art major Aliza Shvarts ’08 wants to make a statement.

Beginning next Tuesday, Shvarts will be displaying her senior art project, a documentation of a nine-month process during which she artificially inseminated herself “as often as possible” while periodically taking abortifacient drugs to induce miscarriages. Her exhibition will feature video recordings of these forced miscarriages as well as preserved collections of the blood from the process.

The goal in creating the art exhibition, Shvarts said, was to spark conversation and debate on the relationship between art and the human body. But her project has already provoked more than just debate, inciting, for instance, outcry at a forum for fellow senior art majors held last week. And when told about Shvarts’ project, students on both ends of the abortion debate have expressed shock — saying the project does everything from violate moral code to trivialize abortion.

But Shvarts insists her concept was not designed for “shock value.”

“I hope it inspires some sort of discourse,” Shvarts said. “Sure, some people will be upset with the message and will not agree with it, but it’s not the intention of the piece to scandalize anyone.”

The “fabricators,” or donors, of the sperm were not paid for their services, but Shvarts required them to periodically take tests for sexually transmitted diseases. She said she was not concerned about any medical effects the forced miscarriages may have had on her body. The abortifacient drugs she took were legal and herbal, she said, and she did not feel the need to consult a doctor about her repeated miscarriages.

Shvarts declined to specify the number of sperm donors she used, as well as the number of times she inseminated herself.

Art major Juan Castillo ’08 said that although he was intrigued by the creativity and beauty of her senior project, not everyone was as thrilled as he was by the concept and the means by which she attained the result.

“I really loved the idea of this project, but a lot other people didn’t,” Castillo said. “I think that most people were very resistant to thinking about what the project was really about. [The senior-art-project forum] stopped being a conversation on the work itself.”

Although Shvarts said she does not remember the class being quite as hostile as Castillo described, she said she believes it is the nature of her piece to “provoke inquiry.”

“I believe strongly that art should be a medium for politics and ideologies, not just a commodity,” Shvarts said. “I think that I’m creating a project that lives up to the standard of what art is supposed to be.”

The display of Schvarts’ project will feature a large cube suspended from the ceiling of a room in the gallery of Green Hall. Schvarts will wrap hundreds of feet of plastic sheeting around this cube; lined between layers of the sheeting will be the blood from Schvarts’ self-induced miscarriages mixed with Vaseline in order to prevent the blood from drying and to extend the blood throughout the plastic sheeting.

Schvarts will then project recorded videos onto the four sides of the cube. These videos, captured on a VHS camcorder, will show her experiencing miscarriages in her bathrooom tub, she said. Similar videos will be projected onto the walls of the room.

School of Art lecturer Pia Lindman, Schvarts’ senior-project advisor, could not be reached for comment Wednesday night.

Few people outside of Yale’s undergraduate art department have heard about Shvarts’ exhibition. Members of two campus abortion-activist groups — Choose Life at Yale, a pro-life group, and the Reproductive Rights Action League of Yale, a pro-choice group ­— said they were not previously aware of Schvarts’ project.

Alice Buttrick ’10, an officer of RALY, said the group was in no way involved with the art exhibition and had no official opinion on the matter.

Sara Rahman ’09 said, in her opinion, Shvarts is abusing her constitutional right to do what she chooses with her body.

“[Shvarts’ exhibit] turns what is a serious decision for women into an absurdism,” Rahman said. “It discounts the gravity of the situation that is abortion.”

CLAY member Jonathan Serrato ’09 said he does not think CLAY has an official response to Schvarts’ exhibition. But personally, Serrato said he found the concept of the senior art project “surprising” and unethical.

“I feel that she’s manipulating life for the benefit of her art, and I definitely don’t support it,” Serrato said. “I think it’s morally wrong.”

Shvarts emphasized that she is not ashamed of her exhibition, and she has become increasingly comfortable discussing her miscarriage experiences with her peers.

“It was a private and personal endeavor, but also a transparent one for the most part,” Shvarts said. “This isn’t something I’ve been hiding.”

The official reception for the Undergraduate Senior Art Show will be from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on April 25. The exhibition will be on public display from April 22 to May 1. The art exhibition is set to premiere alongside the projects of other art seniors this Tuesday, April 22 at the gallery of Holcombe T. Green Jr. Hall on Chapel Street.

White man held gun to baby as he raped her mother

The choice was clear: Either she comply or he would shoot her baby girl.

Her attacker already had pulled a gun and forced her back into her car in the nearly deserted Wal-Mart parking lot. He reclined the front passenger seat and ordered her to lie facedown. He then raped her while she looked at her child in the car seat behind her.

All the while, the victim said, he pressed a .25-caliber pistol against the 15-month-old toddler.

When he was done, he told her to sit in the driver’s seat and dump the contents of her purse. He robbed her and ordered her to get into the trunk, leaving her baby alone in the car.

Those details emerged Thursday in an arrest affidavit released by the Orange County Sheriff’s Office. Numerous tips and surveillance video led deputies to their suspect, 24-year-old David Welker of Orlando, a felon caught Wednesday afternoon while riding in a car on Orange Center Boulevard.

“It’s one of the most heinous rapes I’ve heard of in a long time,” said Carol Wick, chief executive officer of Harbor House, an Orange County domestic-violence agency. “It’s horribly traumatic for a woman.”

The 35-year-old victim pulled into the Wal-Mart parking lot on South John Young Parkway about 6:15 a.m. Tuesday to pick up milk and supplies for her baby before heading to day care and work, the document said.

She noticed Welker, a skinny man with a long nose and brown hair, waiting near the front door of the store but assumed he was an employee, she told deputies. Security video shows Welker had been loitering there since 5:22 a.m., more than 45 minutes before the attack. He watched others go in and out of the store, the document said.

The victim parked her car and got out, then reached back inside to grab her daughter’s sippy cup and pacifier from the center console.

When she turned around, Welker was behind her, ordering her back into the car at gunpoint, the report said. He told her to drive to the back of the store and park.

Fearing for her child’s life, she complied, she told detectives.

Taking his time, Welker rummaged through the glove compartment looking for something to steal, according to the affidavit.

Then an unimaginable 20 minutes of terror began. Holding his gun against the toddler, who was awake, Welker began raping the mother, sheriff’s reports said.

She noticed a black tattoo on his forearm but couldn’t make out what it said.

When it was over, the naked woman climbed back into the driver’s seat. Welker picked through the contents of her spilled purse, taking her cell phone, a debit card and $70 in cash, the report said.

Before fleeing, Welker made the woman climb inside the trunk but didn’t close it all the way because her daughter was still inside the car. When she determined he was gone, she drove away, seeking help.

“As a mother, it’s striking all of those really terrifying chords,” Wick said of the attack. “You’re a victim, and you cannot protect your child.”

Welker completed a work-release program just weeks before the rape arrest for firearm and grand-theft convictions. He was denied bail Thursday and remains at the Orange County Jail on several felony charges.

When making that ruling, Orange County Judge John Jordan said, “There is no condition of release that can reasonably protect the community.”

CHESTERFIELD, S.C. – A teenager accused of plotting to bomb his high school is a straight-A student whose parents sought help from mental health experts when he slammed his head into a wall last week, authorities said Monday.

Ryan Schallenberger’s parents took him to a hospital three days before his Saturday arrest after he made a 4-inch indentation in the wallboard, prosecutor Jay Hodge said at a court hearing.

Schallenberger, 18, was not badly injured, but his parents also called a local mental health clinic that offered no help, Hodge said. A spokesman for the clinic would not confirm or deny any contact with the family, citing state law.

Hodge said he plans to ask that Schallenberger undergo a mental evaluation at the teenager’s bail hearing Tuesday.

Schallenberger was arrested after his parents called police because he had ordered 10 pounds of ammonium nitrate, an explosive commonly used as fertilizer and was employed in the deadly 1995 Oklahoma City bombing.

Authorities checked the school for bombs over the weekend and on Monday students walked through newly installed metal detectors and past law officers. Still, officials said 60 percent of the school’s 544 students stayed home.

The quiet teenager with a slight build and a wispy mustache had apparently been planning the potentially deadly attack for months, authorities said.

“This kid had the intellect and the means and the materials to carry it out,” Hodge said.

Police said they discovered a hate-filled journal lauding the Columbine killers, an audiotape to be played after he perished during his rampage and a year’s worth of plans for the bombing that included a hand-drawn map of the school.

“He’s just a soft-spoken little kid,” Hodge said, adding that Schallenberger threatened to something “very violent.”

Schallenberger was charged with making a bomb threat and will be charged Tuesday with possession of bomb-making material, Hodge said. He was assigned a lawyer, William Spencer, who did not return calls from The Associated Press.

During a brief court hearing Monday, the teen was silent but appeared agitated — his eyes widening at the sight of cameras awaiting him when he entered in an orange jumpsuit, hands cuffed and ankles shackled.

Schallenberger’s mother and stepfather, John and Laurie Sittley, could not be reached for comment.

Their phone number was unlisted, they did not attend the hearing, and their home about 10 miles from the school was blocked by “No Trespassing” signs. Authorities said Schallenberger has eight siblings and step-siblings.

Sheriff Sam Parker said the teenager’s “heartbroken” parents deserved praise for calling authorities when they retrieved the ammonium nitrate from a post office after receiving a delivery notice at home.

“Without the parents, Chesterfield County would’ve suffered. We thank them,” Parker said.

Authorities said Schallenberger’s journal did not specify targets of an attack, or a date that he planned to carry it out. Randall Lear, the town’s police chief, said Schallenberger was “just mad at the world.”

The Columbine attack happened nine years ago Sunday, but Lear said investigators do not know whether there was any link between the anniversary and Schallenberger’s plans.

Hodge said the teen was set to graduate this year and had no history of bad behavior. Schallenberger was on the school’s academic bowl squad and had won an award from a local college a year earlier.

Students said the teen often ate alone in the cafeteria and were surprised at the accusation.

“I never though he’d be the dude to do something like this,” said James Ford, a 16-year-old sophomore.

Some adults who had met the teen said the accusations were surprising.

“He wouldn’t hurt a flea,” said neighbor Carl Parker, who described Schallenberger as well-mannered and a sports fan who used to watch a neighbor’s pets when he was younger. “People just don’t know him like I do. He’s a good kid.”

Parker said Schallenberger bought the ammonium nitrate off eBay. A spokeswoman for the Internet auction site, Nichola Sharpe, said the substance is legal to sell though it must be specially shipped.

Sharpe said eBay’s fraud investigation unit was working with law enforcement on the case.

Chesterfield is a town of about 1,500 people in northeastern South Carolina near the North Carolina line.

DeLand – A 30-year-old woman caused quite a commotion Wednesday evening when she decided to direct traffic at a DeLand intersection.

Rather than keeping traffic flowing through the intersection of W. Euclid and S. Orange avenues, the woman was creating a bit of a hazard, police said, because she was topless. The DeLand Police Department received a number of calls about 7 p.m. and responded to find the woman “foaming at the mouth and talking to herself,” according to a police report.

The DeLand woman told police that God told her to direct traffic.

She was taken to an area hospital for a mental evaluation.

5 College students caught trying to steal alligator from golf course

Five Embry-Riddle University students are in jail this morning after trying to steal a baby alligator from a miniature golf course in Daytona Beach, police said.

Daytona Beach Shores Police booked Jesse Ramos, 18; George Grampp, 18; Craig DeVries, 19; Eric Tatko, 19 and Thomas Shaughnessy, 19, into the Volusia County Jail on charges of attempting to capture an alligator at the Congo River Miniature Golf Course, off S. Atlantic Avenue.

Robert Ross, the assistant director for media relations at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, confirmed that Ramos is a sophomore majoring in aeronautical science. Shaughnessy is a freshman enrolled in the aerospace engineering program.

Grampp, DeVries and Tatko are all freshmen majoring in the aeronautical science program.

They all face a $1,000 bond.

Police said that two of the students climbed down into the alligator exhibit at 3:28 a.m. in an attempt to capture a baby alligator using a palm frond and duct tape, the report shows.

When spotted by officers, the five students took off running, but were later arrested. Three of the students confessed to officers that they kept a look out while the others tried stealing the gator.

This is not the first time college students have tried to make off with one of the reptiles, officials at the mini golf course said. George King, the general manager at the Daytona Beach location, said that eight years ago, North Carolina college student broke in and tried stealing one of the gators from the exhibit.

King does not remember all the details of the incident, but said that those students were intoxicated.

The alligator exhibit at Congo River holds 25 juvenile gators that are between 2.5 and 3 feet in length. King said that despite their size and age, they can deliver a strong bite.

“They may not break a leg or a hand, but they’re still extremely dangerous,” King said. “If you stick your finger out and they grab it in a death roll, you might lose it. I really don’t know for sure because we haven’t tried it yet.”

King said surveillance tapes from the mini golf course will be turned over to police.

Steven Christen Brettell, of Lenexa, Kan., was in court Thursday.Prosecutors charged Brettell with two counts of criminal use of explosives and one count of criminal damage. Police arrested him Thursday night and said he threw Molotov cocktails into two Lenexa gas stations.Police said Brettell asked the clerk at one station if he was Muslim, left, then came back with a brick and Molotov cocktail and threw it at the window.

He was then caught on surveillance video at another station just seven blocks away, and he threw another bottle filled with a flammable liquid at the store, police said.Police were trying to determine if the attacks should be considered hate crimes. Investigators didn’t know what motivated the incidents, said Karl Burris, of the Lenexa Police Department.Police found Brettell because a second clerk wrote down his license plate number.

Teen critically injured in failed YouTube stunt

What was intended as a car stunt for the YouTube video-sharing Web site horribly backfired for two Peoria teens, police said Wednesday.

The two were injured, one of them critically, in a high-speed crash, said Mike Tellef, a Peoria police spokesman.

A 16-year-old boy, the driver of a 2002 Mitsubishi Eclipse, wanted to get a video shot with all four wheels of the vehicle off the roadway, Tellef said.

However, people in a following car, who were supposed to capture the stunt on a cellphone camera, got so scared by the speed, estimated at 70 to 85 mph, that they failed to shoot the video, Tellef said.

He said the boy lost control of the Eclipse as it roared north on 91st Avenue through the intersection.

The teen was ejected when the Eclipse went off the road, struck several trees and rolled.

The boy remained in a Valley hospital with life-threatening injuries, Tellef said.

A 17-year-old female passenger escaped with injuries that were not life-threatening, he said.

People in the following car helped pull her from the crashed vehicle, Tellef said.

They also told police that the boy had intended to post the video on YouTube.

Authorities have grown increasingly concerned about people filming outrageous stunts and then posting them online to bask in the sudden fame.

For example, several months ago in the southeast Valley, a driver had his Lamborghini sports car filmed traveling in excess of 200 mph on a freeway.

Tellef said the Peoria crash, which remains under investigation, serves as a reminder that parents should sit down with their teens and offer warnings about the serious consequences that can result from shooting YouTube stunts.

“In this case, the two injured teens are very lucky to be alive,” he said.

Study says 300,000 U.S. war criminals suffer mental problems

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – About 300,000 U.S. troops returning from Iraq and Afghanistan suffer symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder or depression, but about half receive no care, an independent study said on Thursday.

The study by the RAND Corp. also estimated that another 320,000 troops have sustained a possible traumatic brain injury during deployment. But researchers could not say how many of those cases were serious or required treatment.

Billed as the first large-scale nongovernmental survey of its kind, the study found that stress disorder and depression afflict 18.5 percent of the more than 1.5 million U.S. forces who have deployed to the two war zones.

The numbers are roughly in line with previous studies. A February assessment by the U.S. Army that showed 17.9 percent of U.S. troops in Iraq and Afghanistan suffering from acute stress, depression or anxiety in 2007, down from 19.1 percent in 2006.

But the 500-page RAND study, based in part on interviews with more than 1,900 soldiers, sailors and Marines, also said that only half of troops suffering debilities receive care. And in half of those cases, the care is only minimally adequate.

“There is a major health crisis facing those men and women who have served our nation in Iraq and Afghanistan,” said Terri Tanielian, a RAND researcher who helped head the study.

“Unless they receive appropriate and effective care for these mental health conditions, there will be long-term consequences for them and for the nation.”

FEAR OF STIGMA

The study said many service members do not seek treatment because they fear the stigma associated with psychological problems could harm their careers.

Post-traumatic stress disorder, or PTSD, can result from wartime trauma such as suffering wounds or witnessing others being hurt. Symptoms include irritability or outbursts of anger, sleep difficulties, trouble concentrating, extreme vigilance and an exaggerated startle response.

RAND recommended that the Pentagon create a way for service members to receive mental health service confidentially and monitor the quality of care.

Army Col. Loree Sutton, director of the U.S. Defense Center of Excellence for Psychological Health and Traumatic Brain Injury, welcomed the study.

She was concerned at the finding that only about half of those who sought help received “minimally adequate” treatment and said it would spur the military to try harder to recruit more mental health specialists.

The Army wants to hire 275 civilian mental health professionals but a tight labor market and difficulties getting civilians into war zones has slowed the effort, officials say.

RAND, a private research organization, estimated that stress and depression among returning soldiers cost $6.2 billion in the two years following deployment, mainly due to lost productivity, medical costs and a higher risk of suicide. BLAINE, Wash. – A 13-year-old boy hopes to win a balloon-blowing record by a nose.

Blowing through one nostril at a time, Andrew Dahl inflated 213 balloons within an hour Friday — a feat that has been submitted for review by Guinness World Records.

His father, Doug Dahl, measured the balloons to make sure each was at least 20 centimeters, the minimum diameter, and his mother, Wendy Dahl, kept the tally.

At one point he asked, “Does this count as practicing my trumpet?” His mother replied, “Only if you can play that with your nose.”

Andrew’s first attempt — 184 balloons in February — was rejected because his father tied the balloons. This time he tied them off himself.

WELLINGTON, Fla. – Vanilla Ice was released from jail Friday following his arrest on a charge of simple battery for allegedly pushing his wife.

The 39-year-old rap performer was arrested Thursday night at the couple’s Wellington home in South Florida. Police said his wife called 911, saying he had kicked and hit her during an argument over buying a bedroom set. She later told deputies he had only pushed her.

Police said Vanilla Ice, whose real name is Robert Van Winkle, denied pushing her.

He was freed Friday after appearing in court.

It wasn’t immediately known if he had an attorney. His agent, Tommy Quon, said he hadn’t heard about the arrest and couldn’t comment.

Vanilla Ice spent a night in jail in 2001 after being arrested following a domestic dispute.

He sold 15 million copies of the single “Ice Ice Baby” in 1990.

HELSINKI, Finland: Finland’s foreign minister was ousted Tuesday by his conservative party over a text message scandal involving an erotic dancer.

The scandal, which had been making headline news for weeks, had eroded trust in and respect for Ilkka Kanerva, said Finance Minister Jyrki Katainen, chairman of the National Coalition Party, which holds the Foreign Ministry post in the coalition government.

“The minister does not enjoy trust,” Katainen told reporters. “It’s a heavy decision. He’s a friend and he’s done his work well.”

Katainen said he would propose Alexander Stubb, a European Parliament lawmaker, as the new foreign minister. He said he had discussed the matter with President Tarja Halonen and Prime Minister Matti Vanhanen, who was traveling abroad. The appointment was expected to be confirmed on Friday.

Kanerva, 60, initially denied reports in Hymy — a gossip magazine — that he had sent about 200 messages by mobile phone to the dancer, Johanna Tukiainen. But last week he apologized publicly, acknowledging he had sent some messages but insisting they were all work-related.

The 29-year-old dancer said Kanerva had, among other things, inquired about her underwear.

On Tuesday, the Hymy monthly published some of the text messages allegedly sent by Kanerva to Tukiainen.

In the messages, Kanerva proposes meetings and dinner with Tukiainen and her sister, asks whether he would be allowed to touch her at a nightclub and discusses women’s clothing.

Kanerva, who held three minister posts in various governments in the 1990s, was chosen to be foreign minister last year by Katainen. In 2005, he was involved in a similar text message scandal when he was a deputy speaker of Parliament.

“He promised he would not repeat” such a scandal, Katainen said, “but he did not keep that promise.”

Although Kanerva apparently broke no laws and his longtime partner accepted his apology, there were widespread calls for his dismissal.

The Foreign Ministry said Tuesday that Kanerva was on sick leave and would not talk to the media. A day earlier, Kanerva told reporters he was “fit and well” and had no intention of resigning.

Resignations or dismissals over personal matters are unusual in Finland, where politics and private lives have traditionally been kept well apart. But times appear to be changing in the Nordic nation.

Vanhanen, who on Sunday reiterated his trust in Kanerva, saying the foreign minister’s private life was his own affair, has guarded his own privacy vehemently. Last year, he sued his former girlfriend for revealing intimate details about their relationship in a book — but lost.

In 2005, Vanhanen’s predecessor and Finland’s first and only female prime minister, Anneli Jaatteenmaki, resigned after only two months in office because she lied about leaking sensitive documents.

Russians adore saunas, or banyas, spending hours in the steam rooms with friends, swapping stories over tea or vodka. Many hit themselves or others with dried birch leaves to improve the circulation.

Chupin said it took him months to build the traveling banya offers the real Russian experience. It has a 400-litre (88-gallon) water tank on top to provide the steam. It is heated with a wood-fired stove.

White teenagers invite girl over and beat her, post video on Youtube

Eight teenagers have been arrested in Lakeland, Fla., on charges that they allegedly beat another teen in an “animalistic attack” so they could make a videotape to post on YouTube.

Seven of the teens remained in juvenile detention Tuesday, authorities said. A boy who was charged as an adult has been released on bail.

Victoria Lindsay was attacked on March 30 by six teenage girls when she arrived at a friend’s home, authorities said.

One of the girls struck the 16-year-old victim on the head several times and then slammed her head into a wall, knocking her unconscious, according to an arrest report.

Later, according to a clip of the video that was released by the Polk County sheriff’s office, the teens can be seen blocking a door and hitting Victoria.

“When I saw my daughter in the emergency room, I didn’t even recognize my own daughter,” her father Patrick Lindsay, said a recent news conference in front of their Florida home. “I just walked in and held her. I didn’t want her to see me weep.”

“I’ve never seen anybody’s face disfigured like that.”

While the beatings took place more than a week ago, Patrick and Talisa Lindsay said their daughter remains scared for her life.

“She is having nightmares over it,” said her mother, during a news conference outside their Florida home. “She has multiple bruises from it, from her head all the way down.”

Her parents blamed the Internet for the incident.

“These Web sites are creating a space for criminal activity, beating, fights,” Patrick Lindsay said. “MySpace, MTV’s ‘Jackass,’ they are enticing our children and desensitizing out children. Now, if they create the best shock video, they are the heroes. They think it is top dollar.”

They described their daughter as a popular, honor-roll student and varsity cheerleader, who was “very well liked.”

“She didn’t deserve to be beat down like a dog,” her father said. “She thought she was going to die.”

“Just the shock of it happening to you and seeing your daughter in a deformity, that was horrific,” Talisa Lindsay said. “It’s very emotional.”

Rubbing his wife’s back as she tried to gain her composure, Patrick Lindsay vowed to get justice for their daughter.

“I’m very upset with these Internet sites,” he said. “As far as I’m concerned, MySpace is the anti-Christ for children. I’m going to carry this as far as I can.”

Sheriff Grady Judd told NBC’s “Today” show on Tuesday that the incident was an “absolutely an animalistic attack.”

“They lured her into the home for express purpose of filming the attack and posting it on the Internet,” he said.

Christina Garcia, mother of one of the defendants, said her daughter had turned the tape over to police.

Dutch legalize gay sex in public parks

Dutch council officials will permit gay sex in public areas but fine dog owners who let their pets off the leash in Amsterdam’s Vondelpark.

Paul van Grieken, an Alderman in the Oud-Zuid district of the city, has startled many Amsterdammers, despite their famously liberal attitudes, with plans to allow public sex as part of this summer’s new rules of conduct for the country’s best-known park.

“Why should we try to impose something that is actually impossible to impose, which also causes little bother for others and for a certain group actually means much pleasure?”, he said.

Amsterdam’s beautiful Vondelpark in the centre of city draws hordes of summer visitors, families, skaters and joggers.

But the park’s rose garden has become famous as a trysting spot for gay men looking for uncomplicated sexual encounters.

Mr van Grieken stresses that tolerance to “cruising” gays, aimed at protecting homosexuals from violence, will have “strict rules attached”.

“Thus, condoms must always be cleared away, it must never take place in the neighbourhood of children’s playgrounds and the sex must be restricted to the evening and night-time,” he said.

The new park rules have the blessing of the Dutch police, who have urged all Dutch parks to follow Amsterdam’s lead.

But Amsterdam’s dog owners are less impressed. The new park code of conduct will set out stiff fines for dogs that are allowed to run around the Vondelpark off the leash.

“Research showed that many people find this disturbing,” said Mr van Grieken.

One dog owner protested: “As long as the park has existed, we’ve been allowed to let our dogs run freely. It’s outrageous that we will be punished from now on but public sex won’t. If they can drop their trousers, why can’t I let my dog loose?”

White Ex-stripper gets 99 years over murder plot

ANCHORAGE, Alaska – A former stripper-turned-soccer-mom convicted of plotting to kill her former fiancé 12 years ago was sentenced Wednesday to 99 years in prison.

Mechele Linehan, 35, who until her arrest had been living a quiet life as the wife of an Olympia, Wash., doctor, was convicted in October of first-degree murder in the 1996 shooting death of Kent Leppink.

Prosecutor Pat Gullufsen said Linehan plotted with another man who hoped to marry her, John Carlin III, to lure Leppink to a rural trail, where Carlin shot him with a .44-caliber handgun.

The motive was a $1 million insurance policy that Linehan mistakenly believed named her as the beneficiary, prosecutors said.

Carlin was sentenced in January to 99 years in prison for firing the shots that killed Leppink.

Anchorage Superior Court Judge Philip Volland called the crime the worst in its category: premeditated, cold and cruel.

“It was a calculated homicide accomplished through deceit, deception and manipulation,” Volland said. “It was done for the most venal of reasons and it was dismissed by the two participants in the most casual of ways. It was a man killed by his friend and his fiance.”

Judge likens her to a ‘puppeteer’
Volland rejected the contention that Linehan was not a significant participant in Leppink’s murder. The evidence showed her obtaining the life insurance policy on Leppink as she was deceiving him about her intentions to marry him, he said. She also used deceit to lure him to the murder scene.

“Just those facts are ones that support complicity in the event,” Volland said.

Dozens of people who knew Linehan in the decade after Leppink’s murder wrote letters supporting her, mentioning her generosity and volunteer service. But Volland said he could not offer a sentence different from the one he gave to Carlin.

“In my mind I can find no principal distinction between the puppet who pulls the trigger and the puppeteer who pulls the strings,” Volland said. “In my judgment, Ms. Linehan was the puppeteer who pulled the strings.”

Linehan showed no emotion as the sentence was pronounced. In a short statement, she said she was not the monster prosecutors and the press made her out to be.

“I beg you from the bottom of my heart to allow me the chance to go back to my family as soon as I possibly can,” she told Volland.

She will be eligible for parole after serving 33 years.

Prosecutors said Linehan was inspired by a 1994 movie, “The Last Seduction,” in which a woman coaxes her lover into killing her husband for money.

Leppink’s body was found by utility workers on the ground near a lonely trail in Hope, more than an hour’s drive from Anchorage. He had been shot three times with a .44 Magnum. Prosecutors say Linehan and Carlin had lured him to the desolate mining community by using a fictitious note that Leppink found, saying Linehan was holed up in a cabin. The cabin didn’t exist.

Carlin and Linehan have denied they were responsible for Leppink’s death. Neither testified.

German arrested for sodomizing Kenyan children

Kenyan police charged a German man on Friday with sodomising three under-age boys while posing as a missionary at a rural church.

Ulrich Karl-Heinz Flesch, 47, denied the charges during a brief appearance at a court in the capital Nairobi.

Prosecutors say he had fled to neighbouring Uganda but was arrested there last week by Interpol officers.

He is accused of committing the offences around the small Central Province town of Limuru between 2004 and 2006 after originally entering Kenya as a tourist.

Senior Principal Magistrate Stella Muketi ordered him to be remanded in custody until his case is heard on April 23.

Thomas Beatie, a former woman who is now a pregnant man, defended his decision today to have a baby, saying he has a “right to have a biological child.”

Despite removing his breasts, growing a wispy beard and legally having his gender changed from female to male, Beatie, 34, kept his female sex organs intact because he hoped to have a child some day.

After years of struggling with his sexual identity and deciding to live as a man, he did the most womanly thing possible — he became pregnant.

In an exclusive interview with Oprah Winfrey, Beatie said his lifelong desire to have children motivated him to use his still working female reproductive organs when he learned that Nancy, his wife of five years, was unable to conceive.

“I actually opted not to do anything to my reproductive organs because I wanted to have a child one day. I see pregnancy as a process and it doesn’t define who I am,” Beatie told Winfrey.

“I feel it’s not a male or female desire to have a child. It’s a human need. I’m a person and I have the right to have a biological child.”

Beatie was impregnated with sperm from a donor. His wife, Nancy, inseminated him at home with a device she said was like a syringe without the needle. They bought it from a veterinarian and it is typically used to feed birds.

He has an intact vagina, but he he did not say how he would deliver the baby.

Beatie, who was born Tracy, said he first felt he was trapped in the wrong body when he was in his 20s. He quickly went from a Miss Teen Hawaii USA finalist to taking testosterone and growing a beard.

“Sexuality is completely different than your gender,” he said, responding to a question about why he did not remain a lesbian woman. “I felt more comfortable being the male gender.”

“It was difficult for society to respect the way I felt inside if I didn’t look like a man outside. I started wearing men’s clothes and people started regarding me as a man.”

Despite having two adult children from her first marriage, Nancy said she could no longer have children because she had her uterus removed.

“It wasn’t difficult because I can’t have children,” Nancy said. “I had endometriosis and they had to remove my womb, therefore I don’t have a womb.”

Beatie and Nancy tried to conceive once before with him carrying the child, but the pregnancy was unsustainable because the fertilized egg had implanted outside of the uterus.

The couple had a difficult time finding a doctor who was willing to help them conceive.

They saw nine obstetricians before one was willing to help them.

“People’s normal perceptions are going to be challenged, but once I met Thomas and Nancy I realized they’re devoted and need quality medical care like everyone else,” doctor Kimberly James told Oprah.

“Thomas has been off testosterone for two years before even trying to conceive. His testosterone levels are normal. Some physical changes are permanent, but his hormone levels are normal. People ask ‘is the baby going to be normal?’ The baby is totally healthy,” she said.

The couple’s family and neighbors have reacted in different ways, some supportive, others less so.

When his first pregnancy failed, “my brother said it was a good thing that it didn’t happen because it would have been a monster,” he told Winfrey.

Nancy’s two daughters, however, are very supportive.

Neighbors, identified only as George and Victoria, from Bend, Ore., said they were more surprised that shocked.

A Polish worker has come up with an unusual excuse after being caught in the act with a vacuum cleaner.

The building contractor claimed he was cleaning his underpants with Henry Hoover when he was found naked and on his knees in a hospital’s staff canteen.

A stunned security guard stumbled onto the man in the middle of a compromising act with the cleaner, which has a large smiley face painted on its front and a hose protruding from its “nose”.

According to the Sun, the contractor was supposed to be locking up the building site near the Great Ormond Street Children’s Hospital where his firm is refurbishing administration offices.

The security guard, suitably horrified, told the man to “clean himself and the hoover” before asking him to leave and informing his bosses.

When later questioned by his employers, the man said he was vacuuming his underpants, which was “a common practice in Poland”. He has since been fired.

The man’s employers, HG Construction, told The Sun: “That behaviour is not acceptable, though it gave a few people a laugh”.

Henry Hoover is described on a cleaning website as “famous for its looks, but under its fascia lies a powerful, reliable vacuum cleaner ready to go time and time again.”

The man is not the first person to be caught in the act with an inanimate object.

Last year, Robert Stewart was placed on probation for three years after being caught trying to have sex with a bicycle.

The 51-year-old was naked from the waist down when two cleaners walked in on him at the the Aberley House Hostel in south west Scotland.

He paused only to ask, “What is it, hen?”, before continuing to “move his hips back and forth as if to simulate sex”. The court was told that alcohol was the cause of his problems.

Police in Ohio say that a married father of three has confessed to repeatedly having sex with his patio picnic table.

Art Price, Jr., 40, has been charged with four counts of public indecency after a neighbor videotaped him getting all nasty with the umbrella hole in the middle of his plastic picnic table. Apparently preferring the table’s legs in the air, Price reportedly flipped the table over before forcing himself inside of it.

Price admitted that his skeevy antics took place both inside and outside of his home, and police say he did his table humping in broad daylight, not far from a school.

In addition to public outrage, we imagine there’s considerable jealousy among Price’s other lawn furniture. While barbecues and lawn chairs don’t have many places for good loving (unless you’re big enough for that drink holder), we’re sure that plastic gnome hiding in the hedges is wondering why he wasn’t chosen. The garden hose, however, is probably pretty relieved.

LONDON — YouTube is facing criticism for making it too easy for people to upload violent or sexually explicit content to the Internet after a 25-year-old mother was filmed while being raped.

A three-minute video showing the mother sexually assaulted by three boys after her drink had been spiked was uploaded soon after the incident, which took place in November.

In the clip, which was filmed with a mobile phone, the mother appears to be unconscious, with her head lolling from side to side, as she is repeatedly raped. Her 2-year-old daughter and 4-year-old son are heard crying in the background.

The mother, from South London, told The Sun that she had been put through the ordeal after drinking champagne that had been spiked with a date-rape drug.

“Three boys aged 14 to 16 did it and it was set up by two girls,” she said. “They came round with a neighbor I trusted and I had no problems with them coming in for a while.”

She said that she opened a bottle of champagne “to be social” and that within seconds of having a glass, she began to feel strange.

A video of the episode was later placed on YouTube, but the clip was quickly taken down after a viewer complained about its graphic nature. It is understood to have been seen 600 times.

“Putting (the video) on the internet was an abomination,” the mother said. “I was raped on film, and you could hear my daughter and 4-year-old son crying. I cannot understand how any Web site could show such a thing.”

A YouTube spokesman said that the site’s rules prohibited content such as pornography and gratuitous violence from being uploaded. When people see content they think is inappropriate, he said, they can flag it and it will be reviewed.

“If the content breaks our terms, then we remove it, and if a user repeatedly breaks the rules we disable their account,” the spokesman said.

A source close to YouTube said it was impossible for the site to review every video that was posted because more than 10 hours of content is uploaded every minute.

The source added that trained staff acted quickly to take down inappropriate content when it was flagged.

Since the mother came forward last month, the Metropolitan Police have begun an investigation into the incident and three teenagers — two aged 16 and one aged 14 — have so far been questioned.

YouTube has said that it cooperates with police when material relevant to an investigation is posted on the site.

Under UK law, sites that host videos posted by third parties must act “expeditiously” to disable access to them in the event of a complaint in order to avoid any liability that may result from the content appearing.

Lawyers said that in this case, there may be liability that would stem from the publication of obscene material.

“It is extremely difficult for YouTube to control this kind of content because in this instance — where you have a video that may depict a crime — there’s no technical measure the site can apply that will prevent it being posted in the first place,” said Struan Robertson, a technology lawyer with Pinsent Masons.

“The only option would be for them to review every video before it is posted and that is unrealistic. What sites like YouTube need is a good reporting mechanism which enables content to be flagged to the site once it has been posted, and YouTube operates well in this sense.”

It is not the first time YouTube has been used as a forum for posting violent content.

Last month, a set of videos appeared on the site which showed students from Hitchin Boys’ School, in Hertfordshire, apparently fighting with each other while bystanders looked on and gave them encouragement.

The footage has since been removed.
