German couple sells baby on Ebay

BERLIN — Authorities in southern Germany said Saturday they have taken custody of a 7-month-old boy after his parents posted an ad on eBay offering to sell him for one euro, worth $1.57.

Peter Hieber, a spokesman for police in the Bavarian town of Krumbach, said the baby was placed in the care of youth services in the southwestern Allgaeu region, although the child’s 23-year-old mother insisted the ad was only a joke.

Authorities have launched an investigation into possible child trafficking against the baby’s mother and 24-year-old father.

”Offering my nearly new baby for sale, as it has gotten too loud. It is a male baby, nearly 28 inches (70 cm) long and can be used either in a baby carrier or a stroller,” police quoted the ad as reading.

No offers were made for the child in the 2½ hours the ad was posted on Tuesday. EBay deleted the posting and assisted police in tracking down the parents.

Here’s one airline cancellation we’re actually glad to see: A German travel company said this week it has decided to scrap a special all-nude flight that had been scheduled for this summer.

According to Australia’s Daily Telegraph newspaper, the fully-booked July 5 flight was to be the first of many aimed at East Germans nostalgic for the nudism that was extremely popular and even encouraged under communist rule.

But OssiUrlaub.de, the firm organizing the trip to a picturesque Baltic Sea island, said it has had second thoughts after “moral objections” in the media and from visitors to its Web site, a spokesman said.

The 50 people with tickets would have boarded the flight in the eastern city of Erfurt fully clothed, but once on the plane would have been free to undress and enjoy the rest of the journey stark naked.

They will now receive a full refund as well as a voucher for other products offered by the company, which normally caters to travelers who keep their clothes on, the firm said.

No word if the flight crew would have been unclothed as well. Now that may not have been such a bad idea — it would have prevented the pilots from flying by the seat of their pants.

BAGHDAD, Iraq (CNN) — The U.S. military “sincerely regrets” that it killed two children in a helicopter attack on militants linked to a suspected al Qaeda in Iraq leader, a colonel with Multi-National Force-Iraq said Thursday.

The U.S. military is investigating the operation against insurgents in northern Iraq’s Salaheddin province, just south of Baiji, it said in a statement Thursday.

An American chopper struck cars near a farm late Wednesday, killing eight people, including two children, Baiji police said. The U.S. military said the children were in a vehicle with militants.

The operation targeted al Qaeda in Iraq militants operating a weapons storage facility, Multi-National Force-Iraq said in its statement.

The militants “were believed to be associated with a suicide bombing network,” the military said.

“Sensitive intelligence further indicated that these individuals were directly associated with a suspected senior [al Qaeda in Iraq] foreign terrorist facilitator,” the military said. “Unfortunately, two children were killed when the other occupants of the vehicle, in which they were riding, exhibited hostile intent.”

The military “sincerely regrets when any innocent civilians are injured that result from terrorists locating themselves in and around them. We take every precaution to protect innocent civilians and engage only hostile threats,” MNF-I spokesman Col. Jerry O’Hara said.

The U.S. chopper strike came on the same day two journalists were killed in Baghdad, one of whom by a “spiteful U.S. sniper,” according to Afaq TV, the station for which the cameraman worked.

The U.S. military said it has not confirmed any civilians died in its operation in the Ubaidi section of eastern Baghdad. However, 11 militants were among those killed, the military said.

“Coalition forces only engage hostile threats and take every precaution to protect innocent civilians,” the U.S. military said. “In this case, initial reports indicate all involved in this incident were [planting roadside bombs] or supporting that effort; they were positively identified as either committing a violent act or posed a threat to commit a violent act before each engagement.”

The Iraqi Interior Ministry said 14 people were killed in the fighting between U.S. forces and militants. An Interior Ministry official confirmed cameraman Wisam Ali Odah was among those killed and said the U.S. military opened fire on people after multiple roadside bombs detonated.

Afaq TV, which is affiliated with Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki, reported Odah was among 11 “civilians killed,” including two street cleaners.

Afaq on Thursday ran a black banner with Odah’s picture on the top left side of the screen. It also aired mourning programs and pictures of his coffin strapped to the top of a minivan as colleagues wailed and waved goodbye.

Meanwhile, Baquba police said the body of an Iraqi journalist kidnapped by gunmen was found two days after he was abducted.

Haidar Hasan, a reporter for al-Sharq, was found dead Thursday with bullet wounds to his head.

Before Odah’s and Hasan’s deaths, the Committee to Protect Journalists, an international press advocacy group, said 127 journalists and at least 50 media workers had been killed in Iraq since the war began in March 2003.

“Iraq remains the world’s deadliest nation for the press,” according to the group.

Boston’s Children’s Hospital bills itself as the hospital for children — and now it’s also the hospital for children who want a sex change, a procedure some critics are calling “barbaric.”

Dr. Norman Spack, a pediatric specialist at the hospital, has launched a clinic for transgendered kids — boys who feel like girls, girls who want to be boys — and he’s opening his doors to patients as young as 7.

Spack offers his younger patients counseling and drugs that delay the onset of puberty. The drugs stop the natural flood of hormones that would make it difficult to have a sex alteration later in life, allowing patients more time to decide whether they want to make the change.

Spack also offers some teenagers hormone therapy, a drastic step that changes the way they grow and develop. While the effects of drug treatments can be stopped, long-term hormone therapy can be irreversible, causing permanent infertility in both sexes.

For some, that trade-off is worth it. Transgendered children are deeply troubled and have a “high level of suicide attempts,” Spack told the Boston Globe. “I’ve never seen any patient make [a suicide attempt] after they’ve started hormonal treatment,” he said.

Spack would not grant an interview to FOXNews.com and the Boston’s Children’s Hospital declined to respond.

But not all doctors are convinced, and some say the treatments do much more harm than good.

“Treating these children with hormones does considerable harm and it compounds their confusion,” said Dr. Paul McHugh, University Distinguished Service Professor of Psychiatry at John Hopkins University. “Trying to delay puberty or change someone’s gender is a rejection of the lawfulness of nature.”

McHugh said gender reassignment for children harkens back to the dark ages, when choir boys were castrated to retain their high-pitched voices. “It’s barbaric,” he said.

Mat Staver, founder and chairman of Liberty Counsel, a legal charity affiliated with the late Jerry Falwell’s Liberty University, says that transgender disorder is a mental disorder, not a medical one, and that it should be treated with behavior modification, not hormones or surgery.

“Just as you don’t give liposuction to an anorexic, you don’t do sexual reassignment surgery on men who think that they are women and vice versa,” Staver said.

“At some point in childhood,” McHugh said, “many children role play as the opposite sex, but it is a social, not a medical issue.”

But other doctors say there is a transgender “gene.”

Dr. Irene Sills, an physician and Senior Professor of Pediatrics at the State University of New York, has treated 15 transgender children in the last 6 years, and considers the condition innate as a result of her study.

“We have had a case of identical twins that seems to disprove [other] theories,” she told FOXNews.com. “The twin girls were brought up in exactly the same environment, but by the age of 3, one of them kept insisting that she was a boy and kept mimicking masculine dress and behavior.”

Sills reported that her patients and their families have all been pleased with her therapy and support. She said she never asks families to sign a waiver before treating their children. “I trust our procedures and I trust my patients,” she said in an interview.

But some experts expect legal challenges to mount in the face of further treatment. According to Austin Nimocks, senior legal counsel for the conservative Alliance Defense, parents and doctors may not be safe from litigation if children are made sterile due to hormonal treatments — even if they do sign waivers.

“We will eventually start to see such parents and doctors sued and possibly arrested for what is essentially child abuse,” Nimocks told FOXNews.com.

Still, some think transgender medical therapies for children, which have been used for many years in Europe, Asia and Australia, may soon gain more acceptance in the U.S.

“Most medical professionals know very little about transgender treatments for children, so I do grand rounds at hospitals to educate them,” said Stephanie Brill, co-author of “The Transgender Child,” which will be published in June. “The doctors are very receptive, so I believe that we will see transgender medicine become much more prevalent over the next decade.”

Yet even as such procedures are introduced to a wider public and offered to younger patients, it remains to be seen whether proponents of the procedure will find much support.

“Just because modern medicine can accomplish certain things does not mean that these procedures should be done,” said Nimocks. “That’s the mindset of a Dr. Kevorkian, and he wound up in jail.”

A German teenager went downstairs to the family freezer in search of a pizza on yesterday and found instead the frozen bodies of three babies wrapped in plastic bags.

Police in the west German town of Olpe have now arrested his mother in what appears to be the latest incident in a wave of infanticide.

The mother named only as Monika H, 44, already has three grown up children aged between 18 and 24. The three babies seem to have been born during roughly the same period as their living brothers and sisters. The oldest would now have been 23 and the youngest 17.

Pathologists were today defrosting the bodies in order to conduct post mortem examinations and discover the cause of death.

According to police investigators Monika H – now under psychiatric care – was able to disguise her pregnancies under large shapeless clothing, and gave birth in the bath.

The forensic examination has to determine whether the babies were born alive before deciding on charges against the woman.

When the teenager discovered the bodies his relatives – said to be well off and living in a large half-timbered house – held a family conference. They then went together, with the distraught mother, to the police. The police seem to be ruling out any other cause of death.

“The crime has basically been solved,” said Chief Inspector Matthias Giese. “We are concentrating for the moment on questioning neighbours and relatives to complete the picture.”

Germany has been hit by what amounts to an infanticide epidemic. In the last fortnight alone, a dead baby boy has been found hidden under rubble in a roadworks in Saxony, another baby turned up in a rubbish recycling centre, and yet another in an attic.

Again and again, babies are stored in deep-freezes. Last year a 39-year-old Bavarian mother was put on trial for strangling her baby daughter and putting her in the icebox.

The woman explained that she was afraid that a new child – she had boys aged 10 and 4 – would threaten her relationship.” He threatened to throw me out if I concealed another pregnancy,” she told the court.

One dead infant was found dumped in a car park litter bin. Others have been dropped, wrapped in plastic shopping bags, into lakes.

Until recently infanticide – the figures are vague, but run to well over a hundred officially recognised cases a year – was presented as an east German problem, the by-product of poor social services, rural poverty and unemployment.

One notorious case saw a woman in Frankfurt an der Oder, close to the Polish border, burying nine dead babies in flowerpots in her garden. Psychologists say that such mothers apparently feel compelled to keep the dead babies near at hand, despite their shame at what they have done.

It has become clear over the past year, however, that the killing of children cannot be seen merely as a regional phemomenen. Last winter a 31 year old mother in the north German region of Schleswig Holstein drugged and suffocated her five children aged between three and nine.

After she went to the police to confess, detectives found the bodies of the boys sprawled on the living room carpet among scattered toys and rusks.

The rise in baby-killing has spawned new interest in the so-called “Baby-Klappe” – hatches built into the sides of hospitals that allow mothers who have recently given birth to deposit their unwanted child in a safe, warm place and head off a possible case of manslaughter or murder. The child can be reclaimed after a week or two and the whole process is anonymous.

A poster campaign has been extolling the merits of the scheme with slogans like: ”Before babies land in the rubbish bin…”

Senior clergymen and some charities oppose the scheme because they say it encourages irresponsible motherhood.

The motivation for baby killing appears to be rooted in a sense of being overwhelmed by responsibility, and the terror of change within a male-female relationship.

“Some women have a greater fear of losing their partners than of losing their child,” says the criminologist Professor Helmut Kury. “They take desperate measures to save a relationship.”

Gamers hit their target by aiming at sensors positioned on either side of the urinal.

A specially designed paper cone allows women to play too, the inventors say.

Their ‘Place to pee’ logo resembles ‘Manneken Pis’, the little urinating boy fountain that is among Brussels’ top sightseeing attractions.

White Pastor Arrested In Online Sex Bust

A minister at one of the largest churches in North Texas has been arrested in a sex sting operation in Bryan.

Police confirm that Joe Barron was taken into custody after driving more than three hours to have sex with what he thought was a 13-year-old girl.

Barron serves as a minister at Prestonwood Baptist Church in Plano. The 52-year-old has reportedly counseled married couples at the church that has more than 20,000 members.

Friday morning Prestonwood Baptist Church Executive Pastor Mike Buster issued a statement that said – “We are disturbed and saddened by the reports we have heard and we are praying for the Barron family. We are fully cooperating with the police in their investigation.”

Barron had chatted online for about two weeks with “the teenager”, who was in reality a Bryan police officer. Officials say during the online communication Barron told “the girl” he wanted to have sex with her and asked her to skip school and meet with him.

Undercover officers arranged the meeting for Thursday morning. As police set up surveillance and prepared to arrest Barron, the man chatted online with the Bryan police officer on his phone as he drove more than three hours to meet “the girl”.

According to police Barron didn’t park where he said he would and there was some confusion about the type of car he was driving, but just before 11 a.m. an officer approached the car with his pistol drawn. The minister reportedly raised his hands I the air and surrendered to police.

When Barron’s car was searched police found 10 condoms folded inside a golf ball box and a computer camera that they believe he was going to give “the girl” as a gift.

Bryan police later traveled to Plano with a search warrant for Barron’s home. There officers seized a desktop computer, two laptops, computer disks and memory cards.

Barron is charged with online solicitation of sex with a minor. The crime is a second-degree felony punishable by up to 20 years in prison and a $10,000 fine.

A bail hearing for Barron is set for later today.

He had oral sex with the 15-year-old both times before two, then three girls kicked him.

He drove them home in his Honda Civic, paying two girls £10 and one a bottle of whisky, Oxford Crown Court heard.

Cops investigated when he complained one was pestering HIM for sex.

A SOLDIER thought he was in for a night of sexual adventure when he let a woman handcuff him but instead she assaulted him because she thought he had wronged her, a Perth court has been told.

Nicola Clunies-Ross went on trial in the West Australian District Court today accused of luring her Darwin-based soldier lover to her Perth home on October 28, 2006.

She has pleaded not guilty to assault occasioning bodily harm, aggravated sexual penetration without consent and deprivation of liberty.

Prosecutor Amanda Burrows told the jury today that Ms Clunies-Ross believed her 19-year-old lover had wronged her and was lying about an ex-girlfriend and may have had hepatitis C.

Ms Clunies-Ross lured him to her flat, told him she had a surprise for him, ordered him to strip and handcuffed him to a chair.

“He consented to being constrained at that point in time. He thought he was in for a night of sexual adventure,” Ms Burrows said.

But instead, a champagne-sipping Ms Clunies-Ross smiled at the man and told him “I am going to destroy you”, Ms Burrows said.

Then her longer-term boyfriend Peter Gurdulic, also a 19-year-old Darwin-based soldier, arrived with a big vibrator which she used on her victim in a one-hour ordeal.

The court was told the long-term boyfriend took photos and short videos of the attack and threatened to publish them on an army computer hard drive, accessible to all soldiers, if the victim did not do what he was told.

Ms Burrows said the man fled in a taxi after being released. He reported the assault to police in Darwin after seeking advice from a senior officer.

In pre-recorded evidence, made before he deployed to Iraq, the victim said Clunies-Ross smiled during his ordeal, during which Gurdulic brandished a large knife and the pair hit him across his kidneys.

“I yelled quite loud but being gagged it wouldn’t come out,” he said.

In a police interview Clunies-Ross denied the attack was a form of payback and admitted holding the vibrator near his anus.

Clunies-Ross’ lawyer Jeremy Scudds said she denied actually penetrating her restrained lover.

Mr Scudds said she was scared of Gurdulic but had no idea what would happen when the unstable man arrived at her flat, angry that his fellow soldier had “whiteanted” him and then made a move on Clunies-Ross.

“He was the type of man who was domineering and controlling,” he said.

Gurdulic was found dead in unsuspicious circumstances at Leeuwin Barracks in November 2006 after being charged over the alleged attack.

The trial, set down for four days, continues.

Austrian man hacks family to death

An Austrian man has handed himself into police after allegedly hacking his wife, seven-year-old daughter, parents and father-in-law to death with axe.

The unnamed 39-year-old walked into a police station in Vienna and confessed that the bodies of his wife and daughter were in his flat, police said.

His parents were found dead in Linz, 180km (112 miles) west of Vienna, and his father-in-law in nearby Ansfelden.

Police told the Reuters news agency the suspect said he had financial problems.

They said he had borrowed money from his relatives, lost it in business deals which later went wrong and said he wanted to spare them from the scandal, Reuters reported.

Investigators are still questioning the man about all five deaths, Vienna police spokeswoman Karin Strycek said.

Ms Strycek said the killings had taken place on Tuesday evening and that the man’s wife had been found dead in the apartment’s bathroom and his daughter in a cupboard.

Kenneth Morris, 54, was left furious when his former girlfriend ditched him for someone else – and left him footing the rent bill.

When he found a DVD of her performing oral sex on a dog in an obscene homemade film, he decided to get his own back.

Morris copied the DVD then gave it to one unsuspecting friend saying: �Watch this – it’s gross.�

The shocked pal was so disgusted by what he saw he immediately alerted the RSPCA and police.

When officers searched his house they found DVDs of Morris having sex with many different women and he was arrested.

At Minshull Street Crown Court, Morris of Eccles in Salford, Greater Manchester, admitted distributing obscene material.

He leant on a crutch and nodded his head in the dock as he was sentenced to a 12 month supervision order.

In sentencing Judge Mushtaq Khokar told him: �You have pleaded guilty to distributing obscene material – and of course it is obscene.

�It also related to your former partner of 13 years and it was a very very serious offence. You need assistance from the probation service. You have problems.�

Earlier the court heard the offence occurred after Morris split from his girlfriend in late 2005.

Prosecuting Mr Andrew Long said: �That relationship came to an end in late 2005 or early 2006 when she left the defendant for someone else and left unpaid rent arrears.

�At that time a homemade sex video began to surface in Eccles which showed the woman performing oral sex on a dog.�

In mitigation Mr Robert Elias said: �He has had a very chaotic lifestyle. He is charged with distributing the material not making it.

Homeland Security office filled with feces

ST. PAUL, Minn., March 19 (UPI) — Someone with an urge to purge took it out on the Minnesota Homeland Security and Emergency Management office in downtown St. Paul, police said.

An unknown man defecated in several rooms Friday afternoon and left on foot before an officer arrived, the St. Paul Pioneer Press reported Tuesday. Based on the suspect’s description, he appeared to be homeless, a police spokesman said.

It turns out the Homeland office wasn’t too secure — a contractor working for the building’s management failed to properly secure a door behind him, said Susan Lasley, spokeswoman for the Minnesota Department of Pubic Safety.

Neighbours spotted David Batchelor in his street in Perth in the underwear which left his genitals partly exposed.

Perth Sheriff Court heard that children walking home from school had been passing by at the time.

His lawyer said that Batchelor had been drunk and there was no sexual element to the way he had behaved. He admitted committing a breach of the peace.

When officers had turned up to investigate they found Batchelor still partially dressed and with his flimsy thong on the wrong way round.

At the court previously, Fiscal Depute Hannah Kennedy said: “The witnesses watched as the accused walked between the common close entrance and the pavement. He went behind some bushes outside his house.

“There were a large number of schoolchildren passing his home address at this stage.

“He returned to his flat then reappeared still wearing this item.

“It was still exposing his genitalia. The witnesses were alarmed by his actions and concerned for the children who had passed.”

Batchelor claimed he had not seen anyone around, but then confessed he looked at everyone as they went past and the “schoolgirls were bonnie.”

Mrs Kennedy added: “Asked why he did it, he replied ‘I don’t know. I was just feeding the birds and if I was wanting to do that I would just go down town and get a whore’.”

Sheriff Michael Fletcher said: “The alcohol seems to be at the root of the problem and nothing much can be done about that, given his attitude towards it.”

Stupid White Inventions : An Underwater Cemetery

MIAMI — About 45 feet beneath the ocean’s surface lies a cemetery with gates, pathways, plaques and even benches.

The Neptune Memorial Reef, which opened last fall, is seen by its creators as a perfect final resting spot for those who loved the sea. They hope that one day the reef will cover 16 acres and have room for 125,000 remains.

“This is simply as good as it gets,” said Gary Levine, a diver who conceived the reef and is now a shareholder in the company that owns it.

The Neptune Memorial Reef is in open waters 3 1/4 miles off the coast of Key Biscayne, which means any certified diver can visit. The artificial reef’s first phase allows for about 850 remains.

The ashes are mixed with cement designed for underwater use and fitted into a mold, which a diver then places and secures into the reef. A copper and bronze plaque is installed with the person’s name, date of birth and death. There is also a line for a message.

Jim Hutslar, who manages the construction and deployment of the placements, said he wears sunglasses when he mixes the remains with cement to hide his emotions, especially when the family of the deceased is present.

“I intentionally try to think about the person,” Hutslar said. “I am pretty sentimental anyway.”

In one instance, a mother wanted to mix the cement and ashes of her son. She also left the imprints of her fingerprints and put a note into it.

“It’s sad to see someone die, but this is almost a celebration of life,” said artist Kim Brandell, who created the reef’s design. “We call it ‘life after life.”‘

In March, the remains of 93-year-old diver Bert Kilbride — who called himself “The Last Pirate of the Caribbean” — were placed atop a column of the reef’s main gate, because of his contributions to the sea. Kilbride was named the oldest living scuba diver in this year’s Guinness Book of World Records.

“I think he would feel very honored,” his son Gary Kilbride said. “This is somebody who has been connected to the sea his whole life.”

Originally, the reef was named after the so-called lost city of Atlantis, but it changed after its owners Afterlife Services Inc. partnered with BG Capital in 2007 to form the company, said Jerry Norman, president of the Neptune Society, which is marketing the reef. The company specializes in cremation services across 11 states.

Brandell said he was given no parameters in the reef’s designs, which grew as they waited three years for permits.

“It just kept getting larger. When we went to get permitting, it took so long. During that time I kept developing the ideas,” Brandell said.

The structures are 90 percent cement. Some of the sculptural elements are in bronze and steel. It is the same pH balance as the sea, he said.

“I designed it to be a divers’ location. I am hoping and planning it be to the most dived location on the planet,” Brandell said. “I didn’t want it to look like Roman or Greek architecture. I wanted it to be contemporary or modern in design.”

As a diver swims down the pathways of the reef there will be themed areas, like dancing or sports.

“If it’s music I might have concrete or metal musical instruments,” Brandell said. “Nothing is going to be in words to describe these features — it will be sculptural elements.”

Location and temperature made it an easy-to-make reef, Norman said.

“It’s very conducive to marine habitat growth. You’ve got marine organisms, light and water,” he said. “It’s an easy dive for beginners and well as (the) experienced.”

The cost of a placement starts at $995 and can go to $6,495, for those who want to be placed inside the base of a lion statue for all eternity.

Hutslar said the reef is designed to last forever and engineered to withstand the harshest hurricane that has hit Florida in the last 100 years.

Stephen Blair, chief of the restoration and enhancement section of Miami-Dade County’s department of Environmental Resources Management, which has oversight of the reef, said it will become a tourist attraction.

“I think the combination of the structure, the dive-site aspect as well as how it’s being used, makes it a unique site,” Blair said.

Keith Mille, an environmental specialist with Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission, said another method of burying ashes inside reef balls creates a habitat for fish and corals to attach. But he was impressed with the engineering concepts for this reef and the environment that it creates for divers.

Dive companies on the reef’s Web site said people have been calling with interest in diving it.

“I am sure once it’s completed … it’s going to be spectacular. It’s definitely a beautiful site,” said Alex Nunez, an instructor at South Beach Divers.

Drunk Congressman admits fathering child from affair

WASHINGTON – Rep. Vito Fossella of New York acknowledged on Thursday that he fathered a child from an extramarital affair, answering questions that arose from his arrest on drunken driving charges last week.

“My personal failings and imperfections have caused enormous pain to the people I love and I am truly sorry,” said Fossella, a Republican, who has three children with his wife in Staten Island, N.Y.

Fossella’s private life came under scrutiny after he was arrested last week in the Virginia suburbs of Washington. Police said his blood-alcohol level was twice the legal limit, and he could face a mandatory five days in jail if convicted.

When Fossella was pulled over, police said he told officers that he was going to see his daughter in the area. That prompted questions about who the daughter was.

“I have had a relationship with Laura Fay, with whom I have a 3-year-old daughter,” Fossella said in his statement. It was Fay who got him out of jail after the arrest.

Democrats look for gain
The disclosure clouds Fossella’s political future. He faced a surprisingly tough re-election challenge in 2006, and Democrats were hoping to unseat him this year.

“While I understand that there will be many questions, including those about my political future, making any political decisions right now are furthest from my mind. Over the coming weeks and months, I will continue to do my job and I will work hard to heal the deep wounds I have caused,” he said.

Fossella was elected to Congress in 1997 in a special election to replace Rep. Susan Molinari, who resigned. A graduate of the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, he also earned a law degree from Fordham University.

Fossella, 43, serves as a member of the House Committee on Energy and Commerce.

White pedophile caught after international man hunt

PARIS (AP) — A suspected pedophile targeted in an international manhunt was detained Thursday by police in the United States, Interpol announced.

The arrest was made two days after Interpol, the international police agency based in Lyon, France, appealed for public help to track down the man.

Interpol says the man was detained in Union City, New Jersey. The police agency identified the suspect as Wayne Nelson Corliss, 58, an actor who also goes by the stage name of Casey Wane.

Interpol said the man is suspected of sexually abusing at least three young boys from Southeast Asia. It said that photos seized by police in Norway in 2006 showed the man’s alleged abuse. Interpol said the boys were thought to have been as young as 6 to 10 years old.

The agency had appealed for public help because two years of police investigations had failed to determine the man’s identity, nationality and whereabouts. Interpol said it feared that the man’s alleged abuse of children could continue if he was not caught.

Interpol had said Wednesday that its appeal produced more than 200 leads — potential names, locations and photos of the suspect — in the first 24 hours.

It was only the second time that Interpol had launched such a public manhunt for a suspected pedophile. The first time, last October, also rapidly led to an arrest, by police in Thailand, of a 32-year-old teacher from Canada, Christopher Paul Neil.

In that case, Neil’s face had originally been disguised in Internet photos with a digital swirl. Police reversed the swirl process, unmasking his face, and Interpol released those cleaned-up images publicly. Neil went on trial in March, accused of sexually abusing a 9-year-old boy.

The suspect in the latest case did not appear to make any effort to hide his identity in the photos that were seized in Norway on the computer hard drive of a man later convicted of child sex offenses, Interpol officials said.

Interpol on Tuesday had released six photos of the suspect publicly as part of its appeal for help. They showed a gray-haired white man wearing glasses or lying on a checkered mattress or blanket in a yellow plaid shirt. Other photos seen by the Associated Press, not among those made public, appeared to show the man engaged in sexual acts with boys.

Because of the lack of basic information about the man, Interpol officials had previously been simply calling the suspect “Mr. IDent” — shortened from the word identity.

Interpol officials said they did not know why the man did not attempt to disguise his face in photos that showed alleged abuse. But officials noted that pedophile offenders sometimes reveal their identities to win trust in child-sex offender circles, in hopes of getting access to other children or images.

A computerized Interpol database of child abuse images played a part in the hunt for the man.

The first photos seized in Norway and others received in the two years since were run through the database of more than 520,000 images. It compared the photos with others, looking for matches. In all, the database and police investigations helped turn up a total of around 800 images, including nearly 100 of the man himself and others of his suspected victims or places where he is thought to have committed his alleged crimes, Interpol said.

Alcohol was strongly associated with underage sex

Young adults in Europe deliberately binge on drink and drugs to improve their sex lives, research suggests.

The UK has one of the worst reputations for binge drinking and underage sex but there are striking similarities between countries, a study found.

A third of 16 to 35-year-old men and 23% of women questioned said they drank to increase their chance of sex.

The study – of 1,341 young people in nine countries including the UK – is published in BMC Public Health.

Young people were also more at risk of unsafe sex while under the influence of alcohol or drugs, the study found.

The researchers said although it was well known that use of alcohol and drugs was linked to risky sexual behaviour, this study showed many young people were “strategically” binge drinking or abusing drugs to improve their sex lives.

They questioned young people in nine cities, one each in the UK, Germany, Austria, Czech Republic, Greece, Italy, Portugal, Spain and Slovenia – who all routinely went to pubs, bars and nightclubs.

Early use of alcohol and other drugs was closely linked to having sex under the age of 16 years, in all countries, especially in girls.

Almost half of participants in Vienna, Austria had drunk alcohol and had sex by the time they were 16 compared with 36% in Venice, Italy, 37% in Palma, Spain and 30% in Liverpool.

The same was true for those who took drugs under the age of 16 but there were variations in popularity of different drugs among different countries.

More than a quarter of youngsters taking cocaine said they used it to prolong sex and drug use in general was linked to having multiple partners.

‘Risky’

Drunkenness and drug use were found to be strongly associated with an increase in risk taking behaviour and feeling regretful about having sex .

Those who had been drunk in the past four weeks were more likely to have had five or more partners, sex without a condom and to have regretted sex after drink or drugs in the past 12 months.

Cannabis, cocaine or ecstasy use was linked to similar consequences.

Study leader Professor Mark Bellis, director of the Centre for Public Health at Liverpool John Moore’s University said: “Millions of young Europeans now take drugs and drink in ways which alter their sexual decisions and increase their chances of unsafe sex or sex that is later regretted.

“Yet despite the negative consequences, we found many are deliberately taking these substances to achieve quite specific sexual effects.”

He added that strategies to reduce substance abuse and encourage safe sexual behaviour need to take into account the fact two are inextricably linked.

Simon Blake, chief executive of Brook, said: “When it comes to drugs and alcohol young people learn from us, the adults who help determine the culture in which young people are learning about sex, and learning about drugs and alcohol. “Sex and relationships education also needs to include more discussion about the association between alcohol, drugs and unsafe sex.”

Frank Sodeen from Alcohol Concern said: “The report is a good reminder of the multiple dimensions of drink-related harm.”

He added local authorities need to think as broadly as possible about projects to reduce alcohol use and incorporate issues such as sexual health.

Chatroom users ‘egged on White man to kill himself live on webcam’

A father-of-two hanged himself live over the internet in Britain’s first ‘cyber suicide’.

Kevin Whitrick, 42, took his life after being goaded by dozens of chatroom users from across the world who initially believed he was play acting.

But as they watched in horror, Mr Whitrick climbed onto a chair, smashed through a ceiling and then hanged himself with a piece of rope.

Stunned by what they had witnessed – broadcast on a popular chatroom website used by millions of people across the globe – chatroom users immediately contacted the police.

Officers rushed to the electrician’s home in the Wellington area of Shropshire within minutes, smashing down the door to try to save him.

Kevin Whitrick had two 12-year-olds who he visited regularly

But despite their efforts to save him, he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Last night it emerged that Mr Whitrick had been suffering from depression after being badly injured in a car crash last year.

Friends said that the breakdown of his marriage with wife, Paula – with whom he had 12-year-old twins – and the recent death of his father had also been causing him some distress.

Mr Whitrick told users of web-chat site PalTalk what he was going to do two hours before he killed himself on Wednesday night.

He was logged on with around 50 other users to a special “insult” chatroom where people “have a go at each other”.

Today distraught users of the site said that they felt sick and had previously thought the web broadcast was a hoax.

They confirmed Mr Whitrick told friends in the internet chat room of his plans to kill himself but, thinking he was joking, they egged him on telling him to make sure the his webcam was on.

Mr Whitrick, using the user-name Shyboy-17-1, switched on his webcam and went ahead with his grisly plan.

One anonymous user said: “He tied a rope around an uncovered ceiling joist and stood on the chair as he tied the rope around his neck.

“Some of us chatroom users, talking to Kevin over text chat, microphones and video tried to convince him to step down, but others egged him on telling him to get on with it.

“We just couldn’t believe he was doing it – it was surreal.

“One chatter said: ‘F***ing do it, get on with it, get it round your neck. For F***’s sake he can’t even do this properly’.”

Another user who did not wish to be named said: “When Kevin stepped off the chair and was left dangling, the mood in the chatroom changed and people began to realise what they had just seen.

“We started asking if anyone knew where he lived and saying they should contact the police.

“I think someone contacted the police in their local area but sadly no one could get to him in time.”

Shortly after, moderators on the site closed the feed from Kevin’s webcam.

‘Considerate and kind’

Mr Whitrick had been living in his flat, a converted house, after splitting from his wife Paula two years ago.

The couple, who married in 1988, had 12-year-old twins Lewis and Melissa who live with their mother in a three-bedroom, semi-detached home close by.

They are said to have visited their dad, who worked at family firm RMW electrical services in Shrewsbury, at weekends. His older brother Malcolm Whitrick is an associate director at Shrewsbury Town Football Club.

Last night Mrs Whitrick said: “Kevin was a loving father and family man. He was always the life and soul of the party, an extremely considerate and kind person and loved by many, he will be so sadly missed by us all.

“Unfortunately Kevin had a very serious car accident in July 2006 and had never fully recovered back to full health.”

Mr Whitrick’s stepmother Betty Whitrick, 74, told the Mail: ‘Kevin was a bubbly kind of person, full of fun. I just don’t know why he would do this.

“He lived alone but he always cheerful when I saw him. I knew he was very into computers and he also used to like playing bowls.”

Detective Chief Inspector Jon Groves who is leading the investigation said: “Our enquiries to date have revealed that Mr Whitrick was using a chat room with a number of other people at the time of his death.

“We are liasing with the internet service provider at this time to contact other users who were online at the time of this incident and who may have information that could assist our enquiries.

“We are also working to ensure that witness support facilities are available to those who may have been affected by what they saw.”

Sharon Atwal, who works in a cornershop opposite Mr Whitrick’s flat, described him as “subdued” the last time she saw him.

She said: “Every night he’d take eight cans of Boddington’s bitter from the fridge and re-stock it with the cans from the shelf. He always seemed quite cheerful.

“On Wednesday night, though, he didn’t seem himself and it was the first night that he did not re-stock the fridge. It was as if he knew he wouldn’t be coming back.

“He always struck me as very happy, he was friendly and had two perfect kids. I cannot believe he has done this.”

Her brother Bobby added: “Kevin has lived in the flat for the past year and I have seen him every day without fail.

“Last week, he told me about his chat room. He was excited and said he had set it up himself. He said he had been speaking to people in Australia on his webcam.

“His two children used to visit at weekends. He had a very good relationship with them and always gave them lots of money to buy sweets.”

The case appears to echo that of Brandon Vedas, a 21 year-old from Phoenix, Arizona, who committed suicide online using a mix of alcohol and prescription medication.

In that case people in the chat room egged the young man on, while others tried desperately to find his address.

Local MP for the Wrekin, Mark Pritchard, said: “This is a very sad and rare incident. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family.

“It is important that the use of the internet in this death is fully investigated.”

An Australian man and his daughter have asked for understanding after revealing on national TV they have an incestuous relationship, and have a daughter.

John Deaves, 61, appeared on the TV show 60 Minutes with daughter Jenny, 39, and nine-month-old Celeste – to whom he is both father and grandfather.

Last month a judge banned them from having sex with each other and revealed they had a child in 2001 who died.

But they insisted on the programme that they were “normal intellectual adults”.

Mr Deaves said they both “had careers, had a normal life like everybody else”.

He added: “But [we have] fallen in love with each other when we are biologically related, when we’ve discovered each other later in life.”

Mr Deaves had left the family home when his daughter Jenny was a baby, and did not see her again for 30 years.

When the couple met, in 2000, they began a sexual relationship.

Ms Deaves told 60 Minutes she began to see John as a man first and a father second.

“I was looking at him, sort of going, oh, he’s not too bad. Like you might look at a man across the bar at a nightclub,” she said.

“John and I are in this relationship as consenting adults. We are just asking for a little bit of respect and understanding.”

The couple each pleaded guilty to two charges of incest last month and were banned from having sex with each other.

According to the judge’s ruling in the case, the couple had a child in 2001 who died from congenital heart disease shortly after birth.
