Two British law graduates charged with attempted insurance fraud in Brazil are said to be “anxious and concerned” after they were denied bail.

Shanti Andrews and Rebecca Turner, both 23, are being held in the “tough” Polinter prison, near Rio de Janeiro.

The women claim they were robbed but the police allegedly uncovered some of the items in their Rio hostel room.

Their lawyer said they could be in jail for a month. Miss Andrews’ mother said it was a “misunderstanding”.

‘Overcrowded’ conditions

Speaking from Rio, their lawyer Renato Tonini said he was appealing against the judge’s decision.

The lawyer said the two women, who were at the end of a nine-month trip around the world, were sleeping on the floor of a cell.

He said: “They are very nervous and very concerned about their situation, and anxious too.

“They are in a tough prison but they are being treated well by both other prisoners and by the administration. They are being treated as if they were Brazilian.

“The general situation of our jails in Brazil is very, very bad, so the jail they are in is overcrowded.”

He said there was likely to be a decision on the “merit of the charges” in three or four weeks.

The charge carries a maximum prison sentence of more than three years, according to Mr Tonini, but they could also be fined or made to do unpaid work.

‘Mercy’ plea

The pair, who both studied at the University of Sussex, told police in Rio that belongings totalling £1,000 had been stolen during a bus journey.

They were arrested on Sunday after officers from a specialist tourist support unit apparently became suspicious that they had waited several days before reporting the robbery.

A subsequent search of their lodgings in the beach district of Copacabana allegedly uncovered some of the items.

On Wednesday the mother of Miss Andrews said it was a “misunderstanding” and asked the Brazilian authorities to show mercy.

Simone Headley, from Frant, near Tunbridge Wells in Kent, said: “The girls had some things stolen and they put a report into the police station,” she said.

“There was a misunderstanding – a couple of the items they claimed were then found in their luggage.”

SCRANTON, Pa. – In a few weeks, thousands of foreign exchange students will arrive in the United States for what they hope will be a rewarding time of study and cultural enrichment. Shortly after that, Danielle Grijalva’s phone will start ringing, and her e-mail inbox will begin filling up. It happens every year.

While most of the 30,000 exchange students who come to the U.S. each year have positive experiences, some find themselves stuck in bad homes with little prospect of getting out — especially if the agency that placed them doesn’t take their concerns seriously or even blames them for the problems.

These are Grijalva’s kids.

From her base in Oceanside, Calif., the 43-year-old stay-at-home mom has almost single-handedly taken on the foreign exchange industry, intervening in abuse cases, questioning placement agencies‘ marketing practices, and bashing the U.S. State Department for what she says is lax regulation.

The industry says she exaggerates problems and makes reckless allegations. Two defamation lawsuits have been filed against her.

But the watchdog’s complaints about the dozens of programs that import foreigners were recently borne out in northeastern Pennsylvania, where a Scranton woman was charged last week with child endangerment for allegedly placing exchange students in filthy homes with ex-convicts and not enough food. Grijalva helped one of the teens file a complaint with the State Department and offered advice to local child welfare investigators on how to proceed.

Her involvement was to be expected. Since launching her tiny nonprofit five years ago — the Committee for Safety of Foreign Exchange Students — Grijalva (gree-HAHL’-vah) has answered thousands of e-mails and phone calls from aggrieved students and their worried parents back home.

“By the time they reach CFCES, they are so exhausted and so emotional, but so elated to find someone who will say, ‘We will help you as much as we can,’” Grijalva said.

She has racked up some notable successes. Besides getting students out of bad situations, her organization successfully pushed for regulatory reform in 2006 and investigated an Allentown-based placement agency that Pennsylvania authorities shut down earlier this year.

She’s also made enemies. On a recent Sunday morning, Grijalva was served with a state lawsuit that claims she defamed one of the largest exchange programs, California-based Council for Educational Travel, USA, by making “false statements” about it while intervening in the case of a Norwegian student in Minnesota.

A French agency, Programmes Internationaux d’Echanges, and two of its U.S. affiliates sued her for defamation in North Carolina two years ago, and won a preliminary injunction against her while the case proceeds.

Grijalva, who has countersued P.I.E., says the lawsuits are intended to shut her up.

But critics complain that she paints with an overly broad brush, resulting in a distorted picture of the U.S. exchange program. Since the majority of students go home happy, they say it’s unfair and inaccurate to malign an entire industry based on scattered cases of abuse and neglect.

“She tends to speak in fairly broad generalizations that are probably pretty hard to prove,” said John Hishmeh, executive director of the industry’s accrediting body, the Council on Standards for International Educational Travel. “When you look at (the recent Pennsylvania scandal) and somebody says, ‘That’s how they all are,’ that’s reckless.”

Grijalva makes no apologies for her activism or her tactics.

“Some people are trying to say I have an agenda, a vendetta. We’re talking about the health, safety and welfare of children that are treated like cars being moved off the lot,” she said. “This is not about me. This is about the efforts of CSFES to protect these kids.”

In that regard, she has a lot of satisfied customers.

Danish student Emily Larsen says her host family in Denver belonged to a fundamentalist church that denounced Jews, Muslims, homosexuals and others. Larsen, who was raised secular, says she was made to go to the church 10 hours a week, and that it “brainwashed” her and pressured her to join. When her placement counselor ignored her pleas for help, she turned to CSFES.

“I felt like my whole life was totally falling apart,” said Larsen, of Copenhagen, whose experience left her so traumatized that she has been seeing a psychologist. “In two days, Danielle got me out.”

Nemesia Lago, a Colombian whose teenage son was one of five exchange students found to be living in deplorable conditions in Scranton, says Grijalva responded immediately to her request for help and was dogged in her advocacy. “She became like an angel,” Lago, of La Guajira, wrote in an e-mail.

Grijalva says exchange agencies often bring students to the U.S. without first securing host families for them, leading to hasty, ill-advised placements like the ones in northeastern Pennsylvania. And many agencies require students to first approach their local coordinators with problems, threatening them with repatriation if they seek outside help.

She used to be part of the industry, working as a placement counselor between 2002 and 2004 and taking pride in matching exchange students with caring, qualified host families. But she was disturbed by her company’s marketing practices, and quit the business altogether in the wake of a case of sexual abuse — involving a placement by another representative — that she says the company tried to cover up.

Shortly thereafter, Grijalva began CSFES, which she operates on a shoestring, relying on a network of more than 1,000 volunteers around the country. A former legal secretary who left the work force 13 years ago to raise her three children, she is close to finishing her college degree and plans to go to law school.

Lana Simovic of Podgorica, Montenegro says her son was sent home by his exchange agency after only two months for what she described as relatively minor rules violations, prompting a State Department inquiry into the program’s actions. She called Grijalva a godsend.

“Danielle Grijalva is (the) only person that gave me hope that in America there are reasonable people,” she wrote in an e-mail.

LONGMONT, Colo. — A 53-year-old Longmont woman was arrested Wednesday on suspicion that she drugged a male friend during a backyard barbecue and then raped him, police said.

Janice Lynette McCarl was booked into the Boulder County Jail at 7:40 p.m. Wednesday on suspicion of sexual assault, a class-three felony.

Longmont police Cmdr. Tim Lewis said reports of female-on-male rape are very rare; one victims’ advocate said this was only the second local instance she could remember happening within the past decade.

Lewis said McCarl is accused of having inappropriate sexual contact with a 50-year-old male friend.

“She allegedly took unwanted advantage of this friend in a manner he did not want or approve of,” Lewis said.

The man told detectives the incident happened on Nov. 9 at his Longmont house and involved “unwanted penetration.”

A police report released Thursday details the graphic allegations.

The man reported that he was at a barbecue at his home with McCarl.

He said he felt “funny” after some drinks — which he later told investigators were drugged — and went inside and passed out.

About a half-hour later, he claims, he awoke with a painful sensation. He said he remembered waking up intermittently with the woman’s “hands in him.”

He said he could not fully wake up or move, and remembered the woman telling him, “It is OK, go back to sleep.”

He told detectives he recalled waking up the next morning to find the woman sleeping next to him — her shirt covered in blood and lotion, and a bottle of Lubriderm on the table near the woman.

In response to his questions about what happened, McCarl allegedly laughed and said, “What did I do, kill somebody?”

They had coffee together and she left, according to the report.

The man said he spoke with the woman later on and she admitted to drugging him that night, but would not say what she used.

“She apologized to him and he told her that was mean, nasty and disgusting,” police wrote in the report.

Detectives have been investigating the report since then, police said, and arrested McCarl on a warrant.

Lewis, the Longmont commander, said McCarl and the man had a consensual intimate relationship prior to the incident.

On Thursday, a Boulder County judge set McCarl’s bond at $10,000. He denied her request to reduce bond.

According to records with the Colorado Bureau of Investigation, McCarl has two arrests in 2000 for using fraud to obtain dangerous drugs and possession of dangerous drugs.

Janine D’Anniballe, the executive director of Boulder’s Moving to End Sexual Assault, said the Longmont case is only the second time in her 10 years with the agency that she’s heard of such an incident.

“These types of cases, where there is an adult woman with an adult male, are very rare,” she said. “Certainly, women can be offenders, but usually their victims are children or young adults. Men can be victims, but usually as children or young adults or with male perpetrators.”

D’Anniballe said there is often a stigma associated with anyone who is a victim of a sexual assault, but that effect is magnified for male victims.

“There’s this idea that, because he’s a man, he should have just enjoyed it,” she said. “In this case, that is a gross misstatement.

“I think what he did by coming forward is extremely brave. It is no less a rape than any other kind of rape. We need to be supportive and understanding.”

“SPARTANBURG, SOUTH CAROLINA – A Campobello teen is accused of raping one neighbor’s dog and another neighbor’s two little girls. Now the dog has died and charges against the teen have been upgraded.

After receiving word that the dog died possibly because of the rape. Fox Carolina called the Solicitor’s office to see if now new charges would be filed against the teen. An hour later Solicitor Trey Gowdy called to say that the charges will be upgraded to the “most serious animal cruelty charges they have on the books.”

The dog’s owner Sylvia Jones says, “At first when it happened, I couldn’t eat or sleep every morning I’m waking up thinking Princess is there but she’s not.

Princess’s little dog house is empty now. Sylvia Jones says she died of internal bleeding this past Sunday because of the rape. “The vet told me she had a little blood in her urine and that she was bleeding inside.”

Sylvia says she and her husband would not have believed Cory Williamson raped Princess exactly two weeks to the day she died had they not seen it with their own eyes.

“When I got here we were laying on the deck looking at him and he had his pants down and he was doing sexual activity with the dog like a man would do to a woman.”

The Jones family says Princess wouldn’t eat or play anymore after the attack. “She (Princess) couldn’t even sit down, her bottom was swollen sore.”

Sylvia says she knows Princess was just a dog, but she wants people to know that Princess was also a part of her family. A family that now has been forever changed. “She looked so pitiful. It’s sad, there was nothing I could do for her.”

Neighbors worry that if Williamson is accused of raping a dog and molesting two girls in the same neighborhood, who knows what might happen next.

Neighbor Bill Johnson says, “As a community we shouldn’t have to watch our kids every second they’re playing. We want him out of this neighborhood.”

The Solicitor’s office says it wants to make sure Williamson is out of this neighborhood while he’s awaiting trial on the molestation and dog rape charges so they are requesting that his bond be revoked. Williamson’s bond hearing will be held next Friday.”

This is the dramatic moment a terrified tourist nearly had her head bitten off by a huge crocodile.

The woman had been on a boat trip when her tour guide tried to attract the seemingly docile croc by banging a stick against the side.

The move had the desired effect because within a split second it leapt clear of the water with its jaws wide open.

It flew at the startled sightseer who was sitting by the edge of the boat, coming within inches of her face before plunging back into the water.

The unnamed German tourist was left shaking like a leaf and said it was the most terrifying experience of her life.

The snap was taken by an amateur photographer on another boat during a trip down the Tempiski River in Costa Rica.

Paul Stodolny, 29, got his camera out when he spotted the lazy-looking crocodile drifting in the water and continued snapping as it flew out of the water.

Mr Stodolny, from Toronto, Canada, said: ‘I couldn’t believe it even happened, let alone that I caught it on camera.

‘I was on a trip to Costa Rica with my girlfriend Cheyenne and we were on a river cruise to try and see some nature.

‘As we were going down the river we saw another boat stopping to take pictures of this crocodile floating in the water.

‘The tour guide of that boat was luring the crocodile closer by tapping a stick in the water. It started to get really close and as the tour guide pulled the stick out of the water, the crocodile followed it.

‘Before we knew it, this croc just leapt out of the water and seemed to lunge at this poor woman – I think her face says it all.

‘Everyone on the boat gasped and bolted backwards – it was much too close for comfort. After the croc had shown them who was boss, it disappeared back into the water as the woman tried to catch her breath.’

Mr Stodolny, who works for an animation studio, said it was not until later that he realised how lucky the woman was to escape uninjured.

He said: ‘It all happened so quickly, it was only when I got a chance to look at my photos that I saw how close it actually got.

‘We didn’t know the woman before this, but we actually bumped into her at a restaurant later on in the trip and showed her the photo.

‘She said she’d never experienced anything so scary in her life. All she could see was teeth coming at her. I was thrilled to get the photo, it really was a once-in-a lifetime shot.’

Wannabe Samurai fatally stabs girlfriend

Newark, DE – Michael Kolesar, 21, was arrested Sunday after fatally stabbing his girlfriend with a four-foot long samurai sword.

According to the New Castle County Police, Kolesar and his girlfriend, Angel Zurlo, became engaged in an argument after leaving a bar. The fight reportedly became physical when they got home.

Police were dispatched on a call about a stabbing that involved the use of a sword. When officers arrived on scene, Kolesar greeted them at the door, urging: “She’s in there, she’s in there, she’s dying, please come help her.”

Officers found Zurlo dead in the back room of the apartment. As police took Kolesar into custody, he reportedly pleaded with them, saying “I didn’t mean to do it, I killed her, she means everything to me,” according to the arrest report.

A witness told police Zurlo carried the sword into the room. When Kolesar tried to grab the sword away, they struggled with the sword until Zurlo became severly injured.

Kolesar told police he was intoxicated and remembers choking – but not stabbing Zurlo. He said he was “in a rage and probably at fault,” according to the arrest report.

Kolesar was booked into the Newcastle County Jail on charges of manslaughter and possession of a deadly weapon during the commission of a felony. A second male arrested at the scene was released without charges.

White man arrested for making terrorist threats against telemarketer

So what else is new? Why not just hang up?

Fostoria, OH – Charles W. Papenfus, 43, was arrested after he reportedly threatened a telemarketer – stating that he would burn down their building and kill the employee’s families.

According to the suspect’s attorney, the fiasco began when an extended warranty company contacted Papenfus to inform him the factory warranty on his Ford Focus had expired.

Papenfus reportedly became upset because he had purchased the vehicle as a used car that hadn’t been covered by the factory for years. He repeatedly asked the telemarketer why they were calling him about a warranty for a car he purchased used for $3,000.

After hanging up, Papenfus reportedly called the telemarketer back to complain again. The exchange between Papenfus and the telemarketer degenerated into a verbal confrontation where both parties began insulting each other, according Papenfus‘ attorney.

During the confrontation, Papenfus allegedly threatened to burn down the telemarketing firm’s building and kill the families of those employed by the company, according to court documents.

Prosecutors say Papenfus‘ delivered the threats “without provocation” and went so far as to identify specific workers he intended to target. Papenfus‘ wife blamed the outburst on prescription painkillers that she claimed he was taking for a wrist injury.

Papenfus was booked into the St. Louis City Jail on charges of making terroristic threats. Bond has now been set at $40,000.

A father who had no interest in his four-year-old daughter hurled her off a 120ft cliff to avoid paying child support, a prosecutor told a court yesterday.

Cameron Brown, 47, is accused of killing Lauren Sarene Key after splitting from his British-born girlfriend.

Deputy District Attorney Craig Hum told a Los Angeles court that Brown killed Lauren in November 2000 because he didn’t want to pay about $1,000 a month in child support.

But defence lawyer, Pat Harris countered that it was an accident when the girl fell from Inspiration Point in Rancho Palos Verdes.

Hum portrayed Brown as an uncaring father. He argued that Brown and Lauren went out to the cliff where nobody could see them, and he ‘hurled’ her into the Pacific Ocean.

‘This man picked up Lauren, whom he fathered but was never a father to, and threw her off a cliff into the water below,’ Hum said.

Brown, wearing a dark suit and a red tie, stared at Hum during his opening statement and showed no reaction.

Harris gave a different account of his client’s relationship with his daughter, insisting the case was nothing more than ‘character assassination’.

He dismissed the prosecution’s contention that it was a ‘good-versus-evil’ struggle between Brown and the child’s mother, Sarah Key-Marer, a British immigrant.

‘It was two parents trying to work out arrangements so they could have a happy child,’ Harris said.

Harris said Brown carried a picture of Lauren in his wallet, gave her gifts and toasted with his friends when he learned he would get visitation rights.

Two weeks before her death, Brown filed court documents seeking more visits with Lauren, Harris said.

‘It doesn’t make sense,’ he said.

Brown was tried three years ago, but a mistrial was declared after a jury deadlocked on the severity of the crime.

Some jurors favoured a first-degree murder conviction, while others voted for second-degree murder or manslaughter.

A Mansfield man crept into the home of his former girlfriend early yesterday and, believing he was acting on God’s orders, slit their 6-year-old daughter’s throat, authorities said.

Worried that the mother planned to move away with young Kaitlynn, Kristopher L. Griffin slashed a window screen and clambered through a bulkhead before killing the girl, a prosecutor said in court yesterday.

“The defendant indicated that the only way he could save his daughter was to kill her, that God ordered him to do it,’’ said Cynthia Brackett, an assistant Bristol district attorney, recounting an interview Griffin gave to police.

The 35-year-old Griffin left a note seeking “forgiveness for sending Katie to heaven’’ and begged police to shoot him after he was picked up wandering barefoot in the rain in the quiet before dawn, according to police. But in court yesterday he said nothing, staring at the floor and sobbing as he faced charges of murder and home invasion. A plea of not guilty was entered on his behalf.

The judge ordered Griffin held without bail until his next court appearance in August and directed he undergo psychiatric evaluation at Bridgewater State Hospital.

“I think it’s pretty apparent that there are some serious mental health issues here,’’ Joseph Krowski, Griffin’s public counsel, said after the arraignment.

The ghastly nature of the slaying stunned police and local residents. “It’s horrific and heartbreaking; there’s no other way to say it,’’ Mansfield Police Chief Arthur M. O’Neill said.

After investigators had finished collecting evidence from the Chilson Avenue duplex where Kaitlynn was killed, her tiny bicycle remained in the driveway, resting on training wheels. A pink helmet dangled from the handlebars, matching the frame. Neighbor Jimbo Tardivo choked up as he considered it. Kaitlynn would wave and tell playful stories from her second-floor window whenever she saw him below, he said.

“She was a little peanut, a little star in that window, and I’m going to miss her,’’ Tardivo said, his chest heaving under a Harley-Davidson T-shirt as he sobbed. “She was so adorable.’’

Tardivo said Griffin and his girlfriend, who was not identified by police, appeared to have a rocky relationship. Police and prosecutors said the couple broke up two weeks ago, and Griffin went to live in a camper in the yard of a friend’s house on Ware Street, 1 1/2 miles away.

At about 4:05 yesterday morning, the owners of that house called 911 to say that Griffin, who authorities say has been hospitalized multiple times for mental illness, had disappeared and might be in danger of harming himself. Twelve minutes later, the homeowners called again to say that they had discovered a frightening note indicating that Griffin’s daughter could be in danger.In between those calls, Officer Joshua Ellender discovered Griffin wandering on East Street barefoot but wearing a backpack. Appearing calm, Griffin told the officer that he had merely gone for a walk to an all-night pharmacy to get medication, and he accepted a ride home.

Back on Ware Street, one of the homeowners approached the cruiser and told the officer about the note. According to the officer’s report, Ellender asked Griffin if he had hurt anyone, and he replied: “Yes. . . . She’s gone, I had to save her, I killed my little girl.’’

Griffin, with blood staining his cheek and chin, shouted that he wanted to die, banged his head against the police cruiser’s glass, and begged to be shot, Ellender wrote. Griffin handed over the backpack containing the knife he allegedly used to kill his daughter and told police she could be found in the basement of the Chilson Avenue home.

At the same time, other officers were on their way to the yellow, two-family house. When they arrived, the child’s mother told them she thought the girl was asleep in bed. But police found her under a blanket in the basement, her throat slit, O’Neill said.

Taken to the station for booking, Griffin asked police if Massachusetts had the death penalty. Told it did not, he became disconsolate and tried to hit his head against the wall, prompting officers to handcuff Griffin to a bar to prevent him from harming himself, police said.

His clothing removed for evidence, Griffin appeared in an open-backed johnny yesterday in Taunton District Court, under the jurisdiction of Attleboro District Court, which was displaced from its own courthouse by a fire. At 5-foot-5, the 235-pound Griffin was dwarfed by the court officers who flanked him.

O’Neill, the Mansfield chief, said Griffin had no record of violence in the seven or eight years since he moved to the area from Florida.

But criminal records in that state show Griffin was arrested in 1999 by the Jacksonville sheriff’s office on an aggravated-assault charge for a reported domestic incident, but the charge was apparently dropped.

A spokeswoman for the Massachusetts Department of Children and Families said she could not comment on whether the department had been involved with the family.

TAVARES – A 35-year-old man has been arrested on allegations he sexually molested a now-10-year-old girl, including at least once in front of other children.

James Forrest McDonald, of Leesburg, was charged with three counts of sexual battery, two counts of lewd and lascivious exhibition, lewd and lascivious molestation and distribution of harmful material to someone under the age of 18.

He is being held without bail in the Lake County jail on the battery charge.

According to an arrest affidavit, McDonald was accused of raping the child on a number of occasions, showing her pornographic movies and, on one occasion, drawing black dots on her pubic area in front of other children to pretend she had hair there.

The charges were based on the girl’s allegations, and the affidavit adds that a physical examination confirmed her accusations.

The affidavit adds the child’s mother has not been charged and the Department of Children and Family returned the girl to her mother, although sheriff’s detectives said there was reason to believe she knew about the abuse and failed to protect the child.

The girl apparently told investigators her mother told her the sex acts were just a dream. The mother told investigators she didn’t know whether to believe her child. Sheriff’s deputies added they feared the mother likely wouldn’t protect the child if McDonald is released.

According to the affidavit, McDonald denied the allegations, telling the detectives that the girl must have learned some of the things she accused him of in her sex education classes at school.

The detective responded that some of the things the victim mentioned aren’t covered in sex education classes.

Muncie, Ind. – James C. Storie, a 33-year-old Indiana man was arrested Tuesday after switching seats with a 12-year-old girl to avoid a drunk driving arrest in his car.

According to the Deleware County Sheriff’s Office, Storie was driving his Chevy minivan when he caught the attention of a sheriff’s deputy who was passing by him.

When Storie noticed the deputy was turning around to pursue him, he quickly switched seats with a 12-year-old passenger, according to Dep. Bill Curtis of the Delaware Sheriff’s Office.

After the deputy stopped the vehicle, he found the 12-year-old behind the wheel along with Storie and two other pre-teen passengers. An odor of alcohol prompted the deputy to administer a breath test to Storie.

He failed to turn up for his interview with Carlisle Cleaning – who are contracted by the Tesco store in Dumfries.

Local Labour MSP Elaine Murray said it was “suspicious” that Carruthers – who was freed from prison last September – had applied for a post working with women.

Another 38 women later claimed he had raped, attacked or harassed them during his 20-year career.

But Carruthers refused to take part in prison sex offender rehabilitation programmes, admit his guilt or show any remorse.

His sentence was cut by 12 months on appeal – and he served just seven years before his release. He was placed on the sex offenders’ register for life.

At the time The Scottish Sun revealed how police warned his victims he may strike again.

Support group Rape Crisis Scotland last night warned he is STILL a danger. A spokesman said: “Safety of women should always be paramount in the employment of convicted sex offenders.

“As a rapist who has shown no remorse Adam Carruthers is clearly a danger.”

Carruthers was put under Multi-Agency Public Protection Arrangements on his release – where police, social workers and the prison service manage offenders in the community.

A MAPPA spokesman declined to comment.

A Tesco spokesman confirmed: “We use an agency to do cleaning.” Nobody at Carlisle Cleaning was available for comment.

Carruthers applied for the job as he awaits an appeal to get his full police pension reinstated. It was cut 65 per cent on his conviction.

Police said Stephen L. Thompson, 58, urinated in the chair at the Clark County government building after the office closed Tuesday night.

After court reporter Adrianne Fuller noticed stains on her chair four times over the past two months investigators installed a camera in her office.According to the investigation report, video recorded Wednesday showed Thompson, a maintenance worker at the building, urinating in her chair.

He’s charged with two felony counts of attempted battery by bodily waste. Each charge carries a sentence of six months to three years in prison.

Huntington, W.V. – Police in Huntington nabbed four girls who can appreciate a slow economy. An undercover police sting uncovered girls who allegedly offered sex for $20 to $40. Amber Billups and Lillie Collins were charged with misdemeanor prostitution – as it was their first offense.

Billips evoked a tear of sympathy when she explained that her husband was her pimp and had forced her become a hooker to support his drug habit. Police soon got over it and took her to jail anyway.

Silbert got a misdemeanor prostitution charge as this was only her second time at bat. She decided to fight inflation by keeping her rates as low as $30. Don’t say she never gave you anything.

Bowling, however was not so lucky. Cops say this is her third go-round which earns her a nifty felony charge for prostitution. Rates for Bowling began at $40 and jump to $125 if you want her to actually do something.

Hamilton, Ohio – Yes, the Vice units in Ohio have been busy this month as police nabbed four women during a July 1st prostitution sting.

Carol Cope and Tanya Wilson was arrested for soliciting prostitution while Rebecca Zornes and Karen Woods were caught “loitering” in an alleged attempt to engage in prostitution.

Zornes apparently failed to show up for her arraignment – so cops were nice enough to give her ride to jail/court. Both women were also charged with drug related offenses.

BLUE ASH, OH -  A Blue Ash man is under arrest after police say he repeatedly raped a 12-year-old girl he babysat overnights at his home.

Police say James Edward Simpson, 40, was a longtime friend of the family and he watched the girl for two years while her mother worked third shift.

The girl and her mother reported the alleged abuse last week after the girl told a neighbor.

Simpson is charged with 10 counts of rape and is being held at the Hamilton County Jail with no bond.

African American Scholar racially profiled and arrested at his own home by white cops

Harvard professor Henry Louis Gates Jr., one of the nation’s pre-eminent African-American scholars, was arrested Thursday afternoon at his home by Cambridge police investigating a possible break-in. The incident raised concerns among some Harvard faculty that Gates was a victim of racial profiling.

Police arrived at Gates’s Ware Street home near Harvard Square at 12:44 p.m. to question him. Gates, director of the W.E.B. Du Bois Institute for African and African American Research at Harvard, had trouble unlocking his door after it became jammed.

He was booked for disorderly conduct after “exhibiting loud and tumultuous behavior,” according to a police report. Gates accused the investigating officer of being a racist and told him he had “no idea who he was messing with,” the report said.

Gates told the officer that he was being targeted because “I’m a black man in America.”

Friends of Gates said he was already in his home when police arrived. He showed his driver’s license and Harvard identification card, but was handcuffed and taken into police custody for several hours last Thursday, they said.

The police report said Gates was arrested after he yelled at the investigating officer repeatedly inside the residence then followed the officer outside, where Gates continued to upbraid him. “It was at that time that I informed Professor Gates that he was under arrest,” the officer wrote in the report.

Gates, 58, declined to comment today when reached by phone.

The arrest of such a prominent scholar under what some described as dubious circumstances shook some members of the black Harvard community.

“He and I both raised the question of if he had been a white professor, whether this kind of thing would have happened to him, that they arrested him without any corroborating evidence,” said S. Allen Counter, a Harvard Medical School professor who spoke with Gates about the incident Friday. “I am deeply concerned about the way he was treated, and called him to express my deepest sadness and sympathy.”

Counter, who had called Gates from the Nobel Institute in Sweden, where Counter is on sabbatical, said that Gates was “shaken” and “horrified” by his arrest.

Counter has faced a similar situation himself. The well-known neuroscience professor, who is also black, was stopped by two Harvard police officers in 2004 after being mistaken for a robbery suspect as he crossed Harvard Yard. They threatened to arrest him when he could not produce identification.

That incident was among several that ignited criticism from black students and faculty, highlighting the prejudices that many black students say they continue to face at Harvard.

“This is very disturbing that this could happen to anyone, and not just to a person of such distinction,” Counter said. “He was just shocked that this had happened, at 12:44 in the afternoon, in broad daylight. It brings up the question of whether black males are being targeted by Cambridge police for harassment.”

Cambridge police would not comment on the arrest, citing an investigation into the incident by Middlesex District Attorney Gerard T. Leone Jr. A spokesman for Leone said Gates is scheduled to be arraigned on Aug. 26 and said the office could not provide details on the arrest until that time.

Gates is being represented by Harvard Law School professor Charles Ogletree, who has taken on previous cases with racial implications.

Conway, S.C. - Edward Jacob Bilton, a 38-year-old South Carolina man is accused of beating a woman and her son, attempting to burn their house to the ground, and strangling a cat.

Horry County Police claim Bilton succeeded in killing the family’s cat but failed to destroy the house.

According to his arrest affidavit, Bilton wreaked havoc on Saturday night at the home where he was the live-in boyfriend of a woman with a young son.

Police were alerted to a domestic dispute, where they found the house partially covered in gasoline. Entering the residence, they were met with the hysterical woman, who charged her boyfriend with a litany of crimes.

The victims claim it all started when Bilton screamed at the boy for playing too many video games. The woman attempted to intervene in the argument, but Bilton began choking her. When the child stood up for his mother, he allegedly got a severe beating about the face.

Bilton then left the residence and acquired a can of gasoline, and he proceeded to douse the house with it, yelling that he was about to burn it down. It is not clear why he stopped there or when the family cat was killed.

Bilton, who is being held at the J. Reuben Long Detention Center in Horry County, is charged with criminal domestic violence of a high and aggravated nature, attempted arson, ill treatment of animals/animal cruelty, and assault and battery.

White man admits to mass homicide that killed 6

FAYETTEVILLE, TN (WAFF) – The suspect taken to custody after a mass homicide that killed six people in two counties has been arrested on murder charges.

Jacob Lee Shaffer, 30, from Huntsville, was charged with five counts of Criminal Homicide in connection to the slayings by the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation. He is reported to have confessed to the homicides.

Lincoln County, TN authorities confirmed that five people were found shot to death in two different homes on South Lincoln Road on Saturday morning. They also confirmed that a sixth person related to the Lincoln County deaths was also found dead at a Huntsville business.

Lincoln County Sheriff Murray Blackwelder said at a news conference late Saturday afternoon that his department is investigating three crime scenes.

“This is one of the worst crimes Lincoln County has ever seen,” Blackwelder said. “And it’s a tremendous crime scene.”

TBI spokeswoman Kristin Helm said Shaffer was found on the front porch of one of the Lincoln County homes when deputies arrived at the scene.

“At about 10:30 a.m., our department received information from the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office,” said Sgt. Mickey Allen with Huntsville Police Department’s Major Crime Unit. “They apparently have a person in custody who has confessed to several homicides there. He also confessed to a homicide here in Huntsville also. Officers were sent to this location and that has been confirmed.”

Huntsville police officials said officers found the sixth person dead at Hall Cultured Marble and Granite on 1112 Orchard Street late Saturday morning. It is not yet known if the person was killed at that location or elsewhere.

“Apparently the information led right to [the Huntsville business], and very explicit details and the officers were able to locate the victim,” Allen said. “We have no clue as yet of what unfolded there and how it relates to here.”

Neither Blackwelder or Allen indicated whether investigators have determined a motive in the slayings.

Authorities did not release the victims’ ages. But Karon Weatherman, who lives about a half-mile away from the Tennessee homes, said she saw children as young as 4 and 5 running back and forth between the houses across the road from each other.

One of the Tennessee homes was once a skating rink that was converted into a duplex, said Weatherman. She did not know the family but said they moved in earlier this year in the area of mostly rental houses.

“I wouldn’t expect nothing like this to happen,” she said.

All phone numbers listed in Huntsville under Jacob Shaffer’s name had been disconnected. He is currently being held without bond at the Lincoln County Jail.

White man uses sales pitch to molest 13 year old girl

GREENSBURG, Ind. (Daily News) – Adam D. Goff, 22 of Greensburg, allegedly used his job as a magazine salesman to make his way into the home of a 13-year-old girl and sexually molest her, according to a probable cause affidavit filed in Decatur Circuit Court Monday.

Goff was arrested on Saturday, July 11 and initially booked at the Decatur County Jail on charges of sexual battery. His charges were later changed to one count each of child molesting and child solicitation.

At 3:17 p.m. on Saturday, the Greensburg Police Department received a report of an incident that occurred at the residence of the 13-year-old victim, according to the police report. Officers were informed by one of the victim’s parents that a magazine salesman had touched and tried to kiss the girl and then left the area. The GPD acquired a description of a white male wearing a baggy gray shirt and shorts. Officers responded to the victim’s address and checked the area for the suspect. There they learned that the female and her 12-year-old brother were home alone when the alleged incident took place.

The children told the police that they had been home watching television when Goff knocked on the door trying to sell magazines to pay for college. According to the police report, Goff asked if their parents were home before asking if there was someone more than 18 years old in the house. The kids reported that Goff asked if he could flirt with the female, and told the boy to leave the room, offering money if he would do so, according to the police report.

The boy walked out of view of the man, but remained nearby so he could see what was happening. Both children reported that the man led the 13-year-old girl into the hallway where he began touching her, including her breasts and genitals. They stated he kissed her hand and cheek and attempted to kiss her several times. The boy told Goff he received a text from his mother that no one was to be at the house while she was not home, and Goff reportedly left.

When two GPD officers arrived, the kids gave them the description, including information on messy hair and a missing front tooth. Fifty-eight minutes after the call was received, the GPD located a person of interest in the area of North Park. Despite wearing black pants, which did not match the initial description, the officer kept observing him. According to the police report, the man was picked up by a Jeep Cherokee. Following them, the officer noticed two individuals in the front and four individuals in the backseat, which left one without a seat belt.

The officer pulled the Jeep over near Carver and Sixth streets. The occupants explained that they were part of a magazine sales crew, and the officer noticed a male subject in the backseat that matched the description, including the tan shorts, gray shirt, messy hair and missing tooth.

Goff reported that he had been in the area selling magazines, and initially stated that he had not had any contact with juveniles. He then stated that he had spoken with a young girl but upon learning that she was not 18, he left the area, according to the police report. Goff said that he had not touched the girl and had only been there for five minutes, after being told he was going to be detained for investigation. Though he wasn’t under arrest, Goff was handcuffed and read his Miranda rights.

Goff was taken to the victim’s residence where he was positively identified.

At the GPD, Goff said he was a door-to-door salesman, according to the police report. He stated that he is a homosexual and is not attracted to females. Regarding the alleged incident, Goff said he did speak with the victim, but upon learning she was not 18 and could not purchase magazines, he thanked her for her time and tried to leave. Goff reported that the 13-year-old victim told him to come back later, and later said he showed the girl the magazines before leaving.

The police report states that Goff went into great detail regarding all of the people he tried to sell magazines to, even providing specific times. The officer performing the investigation noted that Goff had no watch or phone or other type of device to verify the time while he was working.

During the interview, Goff became agitated, screaming obscenities but never requested that the interview end. The officer attempted to conclude the interview before being called back in by Goff.

According to the police report, Goff then stated the 13-year-old female was pulling on the papers he was trying to show her while the 12 year old male was nearby. Goff said that he tried to sell the magazines to the girl, and initially lied about it because he was afraid of his boss finding out. Goff reported that, as part of his sales pitch, he was flirting with the girl, and she flirted back, telling him she did not have a boyfriend. According to Goff, the female told him she was actually 15, and when he saw she was getting the wrong idea, he left. Goff said he never tried to touch or kiss the girl, and hat the girl was probably upset because he rejected her, the police report states. Eventually, he told police he kissed her hand. Following the interview, Goff was arrested and charged with child solicitation and child molestation. Child molestation is a Class B Felony. If convicted, Goff could face up to 20 years in jail and a fine of up to $10,000. Child solicitation is a Class D Felony, which can result in a prison sentence of up to three years and a fine of up to $10,000.

White man jailed after breaking into house, and raping the owner’s dog

Farmington, W. Va. – Christopher Bagwell, a 26-year-old West Virginia man was arrested after breaking into home, having sex with home owner’s dog.

Bagwell allegedly broke into a home in the area and raped an Australian shepherd/border collie mix dog. The owner was away at work, according to a witness’ report.

The witness, Sierra Hayhurst, arrived at the house on the afternoon of July 8th to return items she had borrowed from the owner. She claims that while standing in the doorway, she spotted the suspect having sexual intercourse with the male dog, which “was making an awful sound.”

She then shouted at Bagwell, calling him a “sick bastard” until he pulled up his pants and dismounted the dog. He then started toward her in a threatening manner, according to police reports.

“His pants were down around his ankles and the dog was making an awful sound,” stated the witness in the arrest complaint.

At this point, Hayhurst called Farmington Police, who soon arrived and promptly arrested Bagwell on felony burglarly and animal cruelty charges. Police allege Bagwell also damaged property in the home while looting it for an undisclosed reason.

Bagwell was booked into the local jail but quickly bonded out.

ELGIN, Iowa (AP) – A man faces criminal mischief charges after he allegedly defecated on a downtown Elgin sidewalk and smeared feces on the door of a building. Authorities said the building houses the Valley Community Coalition. Officials believe the man targeted the organization, but they aren’t sure why.

Fayette County Sheriff Marty Fisher said the man’s action defies the basic morals of the community and was unacceptable.

Authorities said the charges are misdemeanors and are punishable by a fine between $65 and $650 and up to 30 days in jail.

‘Unbelievable’: An NHS leaflet is telling school pupils they have a ‘right’ to an enjoyable sex life and that ‘an orgasm a day keeps the doctor away’

The NHS is telling school pupils they have a ‘right’ to an enjoyable sex life and that it is good for their health.

A Health Service leaflet says experts concentrate too much on the need for safe sex and loving relationships, and not enough on the pleasure it can bring.

But family campaigners last night condemned the guidance, saying it encouraged underage sex and could increase rates of sexually-transmitted diseases.

Under the heading ‘an orgasm a day keeps the doctor away’, the leaflet says: ‘Health promotion experts advocate five portions of fruit and veg a day and 30 minutes physical activity three times a week. What about sex or masturbation twice a week?’

The advice, which also claims regular sex is good for cardiovascular health, has been circulated to parents, teachers and youth workers.

It came to light just a week after it emerged that teenagers who took part in a £6million Government initiative to reduce teenage pregnancies were more than twice as likely to fall pregnant as other girls.

The scheme tried to persuade girls not to get pregnant by handing out condoms and teaching them about sex.

The NHS leaflet has been drawn up by Sheffield primary care trust and is entitled Pleasure.

Its author, Steve Slack, director of the Centre for HIV and Sexual Health at NHS Sheffield, defended it by saying the advice could encourage young people to delay losing their virginity until they are sure they will enjoy the experience.

He added that as long as teenagers are fully informed about sex and making decisions free of peer pressure as part of a caring relationship, they have as much right as an adult to a good sex life.

‘It is unbelievable that this is being sent to schools’, he said.

‘I’d like to know what scientific evidence there is to back this up. There are an awful lot of overpaid and under-occupied health promotion officers around who are obsessed with sex.’

He added that inciting underage sex was ‘nothing less than encouraging child abuse’.

‘If the NHS wants to promote a healthy heart, as it says it does in this leaflet, it should put the money into reducing smoking and alcohol,’ he said. ‘Underage sex is as dangerous as underage drink and usually leads to sexual ill-health.’

About 40,000 teenagers become pregnant every year in the UK – the highest level in western Europe. More than half end in abortion.

White meth addict sets girlfriend on fire

TULSA, OK – Tulsa Police are looking for help in finding Kenneth McCurley, a 23-year-old white male accused of setting his girlfriend on fire Friday afternoon.

“He threw gasoline on her and lit her on fire,” said Public Information Officer Bill French with the Tulsa Fire Department. French said that the woman was alive as of about 4:10 p.m. Friday, according to the chief fire investigator.

The 33-year-old woman is suffering from second and third degree burns over at least 80% of her body after an apparent domestic abuse incident at what she says is an operating meth lab.  She told Tulsa Fire investigators that she was arguing with McCurley when he threw a chemical on her and set her on fire.

She is in critical condition at Hillcrest Hospital in Tulsa. She was able to extinguish the fire before firefighters arrived at 1:20 p.m., according to Officer Jason Willingham of the Tulsa Police Department.

Police found some components for manufacturing meth inside the house in the 300 block of East 4th St., though they are not calling it an active meth lab at this time.

Tulsa Police say the boyfriend was not in the house when they gained entry to the house, wearing hazardous materials masks and equipment.

The woman was on the front porch when firefighters arrived just after 1 p.m., according to Public Information Officer Bill French with the Tulsa Fire Department.

She told firefighters that her boyfriend had poured gasoline on her and that he was inside the house cooking meth, French said. She had burns from the neck down, according to the report.

White teacher charged with raping teenage boy for years

Tulsa, OK – John C. Gisler, a 41-year-old Teacher at Whitney Middle School in Tulsa Oklahoma has been charged with raping a teenage boy.

Gisler was brought into Tulsa County District Court on Monday on charges of lewd molestation, forcible, sodomy and second-degree rape, with the alleged victim a boy he was mentoring through the Big Brothers Big Sisters program.

Although the assault reportedly occurred in January 2006, the victim did not come forward until June 15th, according to Tulsa Police Officer Leland Ashley.

Ashley told the media that the boy claims Gisler molested him for almost three years. Among the boy’s claims: that their sexual relationship began when Gisler offered to pay the boy to allow Gisler to watch him masturbate. Investigators say that, over time, Gisler stopped paying and simply had his way with the teenager, forcing him to engage in oral and anal sex.

Detectives filed a police affidavit with the court, claiming that they have obtained a recording of a phone call between Gisler and his alleged victim. On the tape, according to the report, Gisler “made admissions of guilt, specifically apologizing to the victim for ‘hurting him sexually.’ The defendant threatened suicide and begged the victim not to tell anyone.

“The defendant stated that if the victim disclosed the abuse he would lose his job and go to jail for a long time.”

Gisler was arraigned Monday on charges of lewd molestation, forcible, sodomy and second-degree rape.

Following Gisler’s arrest, he was booked into the Tulsa Jail, but he has since been released on bond and awaits trial.

Blue Ash, Ohio – Tammara Hartman, a 46-year-old Blue Ash, Ohio woman has been arrested for bringing her granddaughter along on a drug deal.

Police alleged Hartman had 17 grams of cocaine on her person at the time of her Tuesday arrest and have charged her with drug trafficking. According to police sources, this is at least the woman’s third arrest on crack-dealing charges.

Authorities also allege Hartman brought the five-year-old granddaughter along on a previous drug deal.

She is currently being held in a jail in Lockland on an $11,000 bond.

Powell, TN  – Randall Thomas Hollifield, a 45-year-old youth minister from Powell, Tennessee has been arrested for molesting a young boy.

Hollifield was charged last Tuesday with two counts of rape of a child and sexual exploitation of a minor in the case of a boy, described by police as “younger than 13,” who claims Hollifield molested him during Sunday School.

According Knoxville Police, Hollifield works for Match Maker Incorporated and serves as a volunteer youth minister at the New Beverly Baptist Church in Knoxville.

His arrest affidavit states that Hollifield gave the victim oral sex and then forced him to return the act.

Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Martha Dooley stated that Knoxville deputies then obtained a search warrant suspect’s home, where investigators found over 3,000 images of child pornography on the defendant’s computer. Police stated that more than 100 of the photos feature young boys having sex with each other.

Hollifield is being held at undisclosed county lockup in lieu of a $125,000 bond.

Hundreds of Yemen onlookers crowd the streets, waiting for the public execution of a man who  raped an 11-year-old boy. The public execution is carried out in all it’s graphic detail while the crowd taunts and cheers along the roadway.

With a doctor standing by, al-Raghwah was allowed to say a short prayer before his hands are bound behind him and he is laid face down on a red cloth. Within minutes, the executioner straddles the convict, points his rifle, and delivers Yemen justice to the man’s head. He is then declared dead, wrapped in the red blanket and removed for burial.

According to Yemen authorities, the alleged victim came into al-Raghwah’s barber shop last December and never left alive. al-Raghwah allegedly raped the boy and then cut his body into pieces.

After the barber “reportedly” admitted to the crime, a Yemeni court sentenced him to death. The execution was carried out on Monday. Images of the gruesome execution were released shortly thereafter.

According to sharia law, relatives of an alleged murder victim have the right to pardon the offender’s crime in exchange for compensation in some cases. Here, it’s apparent the alleged victim’s family were in no such mood. They opted for the bullet.

French tourists seen as world’s worst: survey

PARIS– French tourists are the worst in the world, coming across as bad at foreign languages, tight-fisted and arrogant, according to a survey of 4,500 hotel owners across the world.

They finish in last place in the survey carried out for internet travel agency Expedia by polling company TNS Infratest, which said French holidaymakers don’t speak local languages and are seen as impolite.

“It’s mainly the fact that they speak little or no English when they’re abroad, and they don’t speak much of the local language,” Expedia Marketing Director Timothee de Roux told radio station France Info.

“The French don’t go abroad very much. We’re lucky enough to have a country which is magnificent in terms of its landscape and culture,” he said, adding that 90 per cent of French people did their traveling at home.

“So when they’re on holiday they can be a bit stressed, they’re not used to things, and this can lead them to be demanding in a way which could be seen as a certain arrogance.”

French tourists are also accused of generally spending less than other nationalities when abroad.

De Roux said the French, not accustomed to leaving large tips at home where a service charge is automatically levied on restaurant bills, can seem “tight-fisted” compared with other nationalities.

The Japanese ranked top of the Best Tourist survey, with the British and the Germans judged the best of the Europeans.

But French tourists received some consolation for their poor performance, finishing third after the Italians and British for dress sense while on holiday.

CHESNEE — An 8-year-old girl who wanted to spend Wednesday afternoon swimming was brutally shot to death by the estranged husband of her father’s girlfriend, authorities say.

The Spartanburg County Sheriff’s Office plans to charge 50-year-old Ricky Lee Blackwell, of 248 Ridings Road, with murder and kidnapping once he recovers from surgery.

Officials said Blackwell grabbed the child, put her in a headlock and shot her once in the head not far from his double-wide mobile home. The man proceeded to shoot her at least three more times as she was falling to the ground, and perhaps while she was on the ground, Spartanburg County Coroner Rusty Clevenger said.

The tragedy occurred about 3 p.m. on 244 Ridings Road — a narrow road in a rural area of Spartanburg County not far south of Highway 11 between Chesnee and New Prospect. A few mobile homes are the only dwellings on the road.

Blackwell and his wife used to live together on Ridings Road, though the two are now separated. Their adult daughter lives in a unit nearby, at 244 Ridings Road — the scene of the crime.

Blackwell’s estranged wife brought her boyfriend’s child, Heather, to 244 Ridings Road Wednesday afternoon to go swimming.

“When she got here, her estranged husband showed up — he lives next door — I don’t know if he saw her pull in, if he knew she was coming or what,” said Master Deputy Tony Ivey with the Sheriff’s Office said. “That’s when everything took place.”

Heather Brooke Center, 8, of 981 Lightwood Knot Road in Woodruff, died from a gunshot wound to the head, Clevenger said. He called the shooting “heinous.”

Deputies were dispatched to the scene just before 3 p.m., a criminal domestic violence call.

They arrived and saw the girl, Heather, lying facedown in a driveway. She had a gunshot wound in one leg, a pool of blood in the center of her back, and blood coming from her right ear, according to an incident report. She did not show any signs of life.

Witnesses said Blackwell fled into the nearby woods. Investigators arrived and began searching for him.

Blackwell emerged and shot himself in the side, Sheriff Chuck Wright said. When asked whether that was an attempt at suicide, Wright said he thought so.

“Once our officers got on the scene, people here, at the home, began to point in the direction of Ricky’s home and said, ‘He’s that way.’ That’s when deputies began sweeping the area,” Ivey said.

Deputies had their guns drawn and ordered the man to drop his weapon. He wouldn’t, Ivey said. They did not fire at Blackwell, Wright said.

Late Wednesday, Blackwell was just out of surgery. Wright said investigators wanted to make sure he was fully coherent before they interviewed him so there would be “no excuses” later on.

How long Blackwell and his estranged wife have been separated wasn’t immediately clear.

“It’s a bad scene,” Wright said. “You have a baby who is deceased who had nothing to do with it. It’s pitiful.”

Neighbors, who asked not to be identified, said they rarely heard any commotion from the residences over on Ridings Road.

“He must have just lost it,” one neighbor said. “I really don’t know why he done what he done. But in my mind, Ricky has always been a fine man.”

A woman stabbed to death in a German court was an Egyptian who had sued her attacker after he insulted her for wearing the Islamic headscarf, local newspapers reported on Friday.

Marwa Aal-Sherbini, 32, who was killed in a court in Dresden on Wednesday, was the wife of Egyptian academic Elwi Ali Okaz who was also hurt in the incident and is now in critical condition in hospital, the state-owned Al-Akhbar reported.

Husband Okaz was in Germany on a scholarship through Menufiya University’s institute of Genetic Engineering. He is still unaware that his wife had died.

The attacker stabbed Sherbini “shortly before she was to give evidence in an appeal lodged by the man against a conviction for insulting her over wearing the hijab,” said the state-owned Egyptian Gazette.

The 28-year-old man, identified only as Axel W., was overpowered and was being investigated for manslaughter over the killing of the woman, a spokesman for the Dresden prosecutor’s office said.

Axel W. was previously found guilty and fined €2,800 in civil compensation for calling the victim a “terrorist” in August 2008 in a Dresden park because she was wearing a headscarf.

Magdi Al-Sayed, press officer at the German embassy in Cairo, said the case was isolated and did not reflect German attitude towards Muslims.

“It is a criminal act. It has nothing to do with persecution against Muslims,” Sayed told the Gazette.

Russia’s Supreme Court has upheld the verdict in the high-profile killing of a nine-year-old Tajik girl in 2004.

In March, seven defendants were found guilty of hooliganism and one of them was found not guilty of murder.

Khursheda Sultonova died of 11 knife wounds in St Petersburg after being attacked by a group of teenagers.

The seven teenagers were given jail terms of 18 months to five-and-a-half years. Prosecutors and defence lawyers appealed against the verdict.

The jury also rejected prosecution claims that the attack in February in 2004 was ethnically motivated.

Ethnic minority activists in Russia have raised concerns that the ruling could provoke more attacks by racists who think they can act with impunity.

Russia has recently witnessed a series of attacks targeting foreigners and representatives of ethnic minorities. Some of the attacks were fatal.

Dissatisfaction

“The panel of judges ruled to uphold the verdict delivered by the St Petersburg City Court on 30 May to seven defendants,” said the Supreme Court’s ruling, quoted by Russia’s Itar-Tass news agency.

The court also dismissed requests by both sides to hold a retrial, without further elaboration.

Prosecutors had been pressing for a retrial, arguing that “the jury sympathised” with the defendants, Itar-Tass reported.

The defence lawyers also expressed dissatisfaction with the court’s ruling, claiming that the trial was flawed.

They said they did not rule out appealing against the verdict to the European Court of Human Rights.

A devious conman who modelled himself on Matt Damon’s high-living killer in The Talented Mr Ripley was today jailed for life after battering his gay lover to death in a hotel room.

Glenn Rycroft, a former British Airways steward who once tricked friends out of more than £200,000 by falsely claiming he needed life-saving cancer treatment, met Gareth MacDonald through an Internet chatroom.

The 30-year-old care worker left his wife and children for the compulsive liar, but after discovering Rycroft was secretly stealing money from his bank account he angrily branded him a ‘f***ing conman’.

Realising he had been exposed, Rycroft – said by friends to have compared himself to Tom Ripley, the gay fantasist who goes on a killing spree in 1950s Italy – searched websites on methods of murder before battering Mr MacDonald to death with a fire extinguisher.

Full details about the 33-year-old’s cheating ways were revealed today after a judge labelled him ‘dishonest, deceitful and utterly cold-hearted’ as he ordered him to serve at least 25 years of a life sentence.

Rycroft was working for BA in 2003 when he callously duped friends and relatives out of their life savings by lying that he was dying of a brain tumour, using the money to enjoy a life of luxury.

The smooth-talking conman shaved his head to fit his account that he was undergoing chemotherapy treatment and even used fake blood bought from a joke shop to simulate lifelike coughing fits which he blamed on the illness.

Friends in Salford, Greater Manchester organised benefit evenings, while a pensioner who had known him since he was a toddler handed over £20,000.

But in reality he was perfectly healthy and used the money to rent a luxury house and go on 11 exotic foreign holidays in just over a year.

Murder hotel: Rycroft bashed his lover over the head at this Travelodge

Arrogant Rycroft even took sympathetic friends on stays at five star hotels in North America and Australia and a luxury golfing trip to the Algarve, telling them he had travelled there for treatment.

Eventually his lies were exposed after one became suspicious and discovered the specialist he claimed to be seeing didn’t exist, and in December 2003 he admitted fraud and was jailed for four years.

But his disgusted friends had no idea how far he would take his interest in the conman-turned-killer played by Matt Damon in the 1999 adaptation of the Patricia Highsmith novel.

‘Glenn watched the film and went on and on about how much he loved it and thought there was something of Mr Ripley in him,’ said one. ‘None of us realised how capable he was of doing of what he did.’

On his release in 2005, Rycroft went on a gay chatroom called Fitlads and met Mr MacDonald, who was happily married to his childhood sweetheart who was expecting their third child.

Impressed by his wealthy lifestyle – Rycroft claimed to have received a £125,000 advance from a book publisher for his life story – MacDonald broke the news to his wife that he was gay, and left the marital home in North Wales.

But despite the lavish gifts and expensive meals, Rycroft was back to his old ways – the house was rented, and the car was leased.

They set up a travel agency together, but it soon became clear that Rycroft did not have the money to make the business a success.

Then Mr MacDonald discovered Rycroft was stealing money from his account and sent a furious text message: ‘I never want to hear from you again, you are the f***ing conman people think you are, get out of my life.’

Rycroft set about a violent revenge, with police later discovering he had searched the Internet using phrases such as ‘how to kill’ and ‘can blows to the head kill’.

Two weeks after sending the text, Mr MacDonald agreed to travel to London to help Rycroft repay debts to relatives.

But while they were staying at a Travelodge at Heston services on the M4 near Heathrow airport on September 15, 2007 he was attacked and killed using a 17lb fire extinguisher.

Rycroft claimed he had left Mr MacDonald alone with a rent boy who must be the killer, but blood spatters were found on his shoes and his fingerprints on the murder weapon.

After he was convicted of murder at the Old Bailey, Mr MacDonald’s mother Susan said in a statement read to the court: ‘To learn Gareth was taken in such a horrendous way by someone we trusted and made welcome in to our house is still unthinkable.

‘Gareth was not only my son but also my friend and I miss him so much. It is such a waste.’

Today Judge Timothy Pontius jailed him for life and ordered he serve a minimum of 25 years.

He told Rycroft he had inhabited a ‘fantasy world of your own warped imaginings’, adding: ‘You are not only a thoroughly dishonest and deceitful man but also a wholly unscrupulous and utterly coldhearted one.’

A red-faced teacher is battling to save her career after accidentally giving her students a DVD which contained her own sex scenes.

American Crystal Defanti handed children in her class a DVD meant to be full of memories of the school year as they went on summer holiday.

But the 29-year-old’s editing skills leave something to be desired.

Parents watching the DVD with their children were horrified – and their offspring confused – after the tape abruptly cut to a six-second sequence that very clearly showed the teacher pleasuring herself on a sofa.

One father told local media that DVD included a scene with the children, aged 10-11, in a classroom sharing stories.

Then, he said, the content changed.

‘My son’s reaction was, “Dad, is that Ms Defanti?”‘ he said.

‘We were up until midnight doing [the] birds and bees.’

Ms Defanti was battling to save her career following the embarrassing mistake

Ms Defanti, a teacher at Isabelle Jackson Elementary school in Elk Grove, California, only realised her mistake when one particularly concerned parent called to inform her what happened.

She called parents the day after the DVD was distributed, crying and apologising for her actions.

‘All she could say was that it was a horrible mix-up,’ the unnamed father said.

Jenson Beach, Florida  – Sometimes you just got to have a cigarette and sometimes people around you, like John Jeffrey Murray, a 51-year-old Jensen Beach, Florida man will take you to task for it.

Murray was arrested on domestic battery charges after allegedly dousing his wife with a blast from a hose, then hitting her in the mouth when she tried to light up.

According to an affidavit from Martin County Police, Murray and his unnamed wife began arguing on Saturday night over his wife’s nicotine addiction and her smoking in the house.

The victim claims that Murray yelled at her and then hit her with a stream of water from the house, soaking her. She then proceeded to pick up a nearby telephone, allegedly only to phone a friend, but Murray became concerned that she would call the police and he reached for the phone.

According to reports, Murray accidentally struck his wife in the mouth with his elbow in the ensuing struggle. Martin County deputies arrived to find the soaked wife lying on the lawn and Murray casually watering the lawn, according to the arrest affidavit.

The accused claimed that he had only been watering the grass and the soaking was an accident. He used the term “over spray” to describe the incident.Murray was charged at the Martin County Jail and has been released on bond.

Uefa tightens anti-racism rules

Uefa has given referees the power to abandon matches in the event of racist chanting inside a stadium.

European football’s governing body has implemented a three-step procedure that comes into force with immediate effect.

The referee should first demand over the public address system that fans’ racist behaviour should stop.

The next step is to suspend the match for up to 10 minutes with the teams sent to the dressing room. If that does not work, the game should be abandoned.

Uefa president Michel Platini said there would be no compromise in his organisation’s stance against racism in football.

“Our policy on racism is one of zero tolerance,” said Platini.

“It was necessary to give the pitch people the means to do something, and we have determined the parameters and lines of conduct, whereby in important cases of racist behaviour in a stadium, a referee must stop the match.

“There are people of authority such as the referee and match delegate who can consult before deciding to temporarily suspend a match for five or 10 minutes, in agreement with officials responsible for security – and from then, if the atmosphere remains negative, the match must be stopped.”

Platini first revealed plans to abandon matches in April of this year after Inter Milan striker Mario Balotelli was racially abused by Juventus fans.

The Italian authorities ordered Juve to play their next home league game behind closed doors.

England players Ashley Cole and Shaun Wright-Phillips were subjected to racial abuse when they played against Spain at Real Madrid’s Bernabeu Stadium in 2004.

The decision was taken at a meeting of Uefa’s executive committee in Vilnius, Lithuania.
